Ian Marshall is Business Advisory Services Director and Head of Tech Strategy. He specialises in advising fast growth companies and start-ups in the Tech Sector.

Based in our Edinburgh office, Ian has extensive experience and networks in the Tech Sector.

Ian can advise you on a wide range of areas including scaling up, business growth, financial readiness, and gaining investment.


“I work with ambitious tech company owners to help them prepare for fast growth and scaling up. Many of these companies will be looking for investment to fund growth and to secure the best funding they need to create investable behaviours in the business. I advise them on the behaviours that investors will demand.

I teach these companies to get the basics right for investment purposes and for scaling up. These behaviours can be things like monthly management accounts, financial modelling, and regular board meetings. Getting these and many other basic behaviours right will better prepare that tech company for investment, fast growth and scale up.”


“I also take on the role of a non-executive director for many of these companies. This role includes being a non-executive Chief Financial Officer but goes beyond just the financial aspects of the company. I can bring my commercial experience to these tech companies. The advice and experience I can add to the boardroom can have a massive impact on the business.

I also act as a facilitator, finding the right people to advise them on other areas of the business. I use the AAB team and their network to ensure they get the right advice on key areas such as R&D tax relief, retaining key employees with EMI schemes and VAT.”

I can advise on preparing for this; if you get these three things right, then they are more likely to secure the funding you need.

I get to know what the business owners ambitions are and help them asses the right journey to get there. Sometimes it’s assessing how quickly the business can grow without breaking it by running out of money. I can help them assess how hard they need to push the business, are they spending and investing in the right things and checking they have the right journey mapped out.”
