“We are here to help clients, not hassle”

Robert Young is an Audit Assistant Manager with a diverse client portfolio, working with organisations across the oil and gas sector, manufacturing, and a wide range of charities. His weeks vary depending on whether he’s based at client premises or in the office, giving him valuable exposure to different industries and ways of working.

Known for his attention to detail and problem-solving approach, Robert delivers timely solutions for clients, drawing on his skills and experience, and knowing exactly where to find the right answers when needed.

Progressing in my career

“One of my biggest challenges so far has been stepping up from a support role into a senior position. Suddenly, the responsibility sat firmly with me. Deadlines, quality of work, and keeping everything on track became my remit.

It was a shift that came with pressure, but also huge satisfaction. There’s nothing better than seeing a project cross the finish line knowing I’ve guided it there. Thankfully, I had a smooth transition into the role with strong support around me, and that made all the difference.”

Clients’ needs at the heart of everything

“There was a client who had previously shared constructive feedback with the team. Going into working with this client, I was apprehensive because I wanted to ensure they had a positive experience. When I managed their job for the first time, I made it a priority to keep everything running smoothly, meet their timeline, and stay responsive throughout.

At the end of the project, the client thanked me for how well the year had gone. For me, that feedback was a real highlight; it showed that the effort to focus on their needs had made a genuine difference.”

Getting to know clients personally

“I would never put good client relationships down to just one thing. For me, it’s about always being approachable and friendly. I make a point of remembering the little things, a client’s hobbies, a favourite sports team, or an interest they’ve mentioned in passing.

Those details spark conversations that move beyond the numbers. They break the ice, strengthen trust, and lay the foundation for lasting relationships. Some of my strongest client connections have come from those casual chats.”

So much variety in people

“No two people work the same way. That’s one of the things I really enjoy about my role, learning how each client and colleague operates, and tailoring my approach to fit them. Whether it’s adapting to a client’s working pattern or collaborating with a colleague who brings a different perspective, it’s a chance to grow my understanding and build stronger outcomes.”

Enjoying working cross-departmental

“I see collaboration as one of the best parts of my job. Working across departments, drawing on the expertise of colleagues, and pulling together to solve client challenges is hugely rewarding.

A great example was a client who was struggling to use Xero and reconcile their bank. It sounded straightforward, but the problem wasn’t budging. I reached out to colleagues in our Business Advisory Group who are Xero specialists. Together, we tackled the issue and delivered the solution the client needed. It showed me that teamwork doesn’t just solve problems, it makes the end result stronger.”

Planning ahead for success

“Audit means spinning a lot of plates. I can be managing several audits at once, each with clients who have very different levels of accounting knowledge. The challenge is prioritising properly so everything keeps moving.

That’s where planning and clear communication are key. Keeping clients updated, balancing workloads, and making sure nothing slips gives me, and the client, confidence in the process.”

Ensuring adaptability

“At the heart of it, I’m motivated by solving problems and building relationships. Whether it’s supporting clients through technical challenges, keeping work on track under pressure, or working with my team to deliver results, it’s about making a difference.

My role constantly challenges me to adapt, communicate, and lead. And for me, that’s what makes it so rewarding.”
