Rob Smith is a Business Advisory Assistant Manager based in our Leeds office. One day he might be providing clients with tailored support in the completion of their management accounts while another he could be completing VAT and corporate tax returns. No matter what project Rob is undertaking he ensures that he delivers a high-quality service and adds value.

As an Assistant Manager, Rob supports and mentors junior members of the team to develop and gain understanding and experience. As someone who joined as one of those junior team members, it’s important for him to give back and be able to support others in the way that he was supported when he was starting out.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS ON TRUST AND COMMUNICATION

“For me, a great client relationship is built on trust and open communication. It’s about understanding that the questions we ask and the work we do are all about getting the bigger picture. The more we know, the better we can help. I like to go beyond just the numbers—getting to know clients on a personal level helps build a stronger relationship and can even aid in financial planning. A casual chat about their latest holiday or family news can make all the difference in creating that connection. It also means I can point them in the direction of other departments if they need support beyond what I offer.”

THERE’S VALUE IN EVERY INTERACTION

“One of the most satisfying aspects of my role is meeting new people. Clients who were strangers not long ago now trust me with their business, rely on my advice, and see me as a key part of their journey. That’s something I take seriously. It’s rewarding to see businesses grow and know that the work I do plays a part in their success. No two clients are the same, which keeps things interesting and means I’m always learning something new.

The People Make the Job

“A huge part of what makes this job enjoyable is the people I work with. Having colleagues who are also friends makes the workplace a much better environment. There’s a natural trust that comes from genuinely getting along with the people around you, and that translates into the work we do together. Our team works efficiently because we understand how each person operates. We push each other to be better—whether that’s encouraging one another to step out of our comfort zones at networking events or supporting each other with a challenging project.”

Confidence is Key

“In this line of work, you have to be confident. Clients come to us because we have the expertise they don’t, so it’s important to communicate that knowledge clearly and assertively—without coming across as rude or dismissive. That balance is key. Being sure of what I know, but also approachable and willing to listen, helps build strong relationships and ensures that work gets done efficiently and effectively.”

Reliable and Results-Driven

“I take pride in being someone my clients can rely on. If a deadline is tight, I’ll get the job done. I’m a hard worker, and I make sure that the people around me feel comfortable and supported. Being confident doesn’t mean being unapproachable—I always aim to create an environment where people feel at ease. Whether it’s helping a client through a difficult situation or assisting a colleague with a challenging task, I want people to know they’re in safe hands.”
