Meet the Corporate Tax team
SMEs. Larger corporate entities and groups. Start-ups. Owner-managed businesses. Family businesses. Charities.
Corporate Tax compliance. Spotting opportunities for any potential claims or tax efficiency gains.
The Audit and BAG teams. Can also refer queries to VAT and Customs teams.
Paul Denner is a Senior Manager in our Corporate Tax team. He manages the Corporate Tax return process for several company clients, including reviewing and submitting returns and advising on payments that need to be made to HMRC.
Paul knows that every client is different. He always makes sure to get to know his clients thoroughly, to better provide for them a unique and personalised service that meets their individual needs.
“I would define an ideal relationship with a client as one where we have built up a mutual trust and they know they can always come to me when they have any tax query – large or small – surrounding their company. They know that I’ll be able to either provide them with an answer immediately or after some research, or that I will know someone in the group who can help them.”
“Clients expect me to always have them in mind when rules, rates or guidance from HMRC is updated and to be reviewing returns as if it was my own business.”
“For me, the most satisfying aspect of working with clients is sometimes just a simple ‘thank you’ from a client either because I’ve answered a query to put their mind at ease, or because there has been a larger piece of work that has come together with a good outcome for them.
When it comes to the most satisfying aspect of working with colleagues, I enjoy growing the team’s knowledge through sharing updates on that latest HMRC changes or helping the team work more effectively using the latest technology updates within our tax software.”
“The overnight move to Teams as a result of the pandemic has meant quick video calls can replace what can be a lot of emails back and forth. Video calls are more personal than text on a screen, but nothing can replace the extra discussions and connections from conversations in-person or being at the coalface of a client’s business.”
“In an age of increasing tax legislation, I aim to meet each of my clients’ needs with bespoke support that enables them to understand how the ever-changing tax landscape impacts their business. This level of personalisation for each client can be challenging, but it’s well worth it for the results it produces.”
“Being on the continued journey of growth of AAB in Leeds is exciting, and so is the growth of the wider Group generally. Being part of AAB means that we can pull from a pool of much broader knowledge and experience.”
“One of the AAB Group Values is that ‘nothing is more important than our people’. We believe that the better our team is taken care of, then by extension AAB’s clients will also be taken better care of. When I review, I am always careful to ensure that the team learns from my comments – either their technical knowledge of tax rules or legislation, or how they can work more effectively. This ensures that in time they can grow their knowledge and pass it on to clients and other team members rather than being stuck with the same questions time after time.”
“I would say that the greatest strength that I bring to AAB is my analytical mindset! It means I scan data to find patterns – sometimes unusual ones – before delving deeper. I ask myself lots of questions about the numbers and the facts and then let them, along with my expertise, to guide my conclusions.”
“When I say I work in tax people often assume HMRC. Then when I say I work for an accountancy firm their next thought is often that I am involved in the sophisticated tax planning of very large multinational firms! People sometimes forget that every business of every size needs support with their tax compliance along with advice regarding tax efficiency.”
