“I want my clients to feel confident that they can turn to me.”

Paul Burton is a Business Advisory Partner, based in our Bolton office. He has over 30 years of experience working in general practice, building a wealth of experience across audit, accounts, and tax. In recent years, he has developed a particular specialism in the medical sector, acting as a trusted advisor to numerous GP practices and serving as the lead contact partner with AISMA. However, his expertise extends far beyond this sector- Paul works closely with a wide range of small to mid-sized owner-managed businesses, providing strategic advice and hands-on support to help them thrive.

Alongside his client-facing role, Paul is also the Staff Partner, overseeing HR matters and ensuring the team is supported, developed, and given the best opportunities to grow. Passionate about building strong relationships- both with clients and colleagues- he takes pride in being a trusted advisor and mentor, helping businesses and individuals achieve their full potential.

Building trust, beyond the numbers

“For me, the ideal client relationship isn’t just about the work we do—it’s about the connection we build. Trust is everything. I want my clients to feel confident that they can turn to me, not just for financial advice, but for support in their wider business decisions too. It’s about being a reliable sounding board, someone they can depend on through both challenges and opportunities. The most rewarding part? When that professional relationship grows into something more, and I become their go-to advisor, their trusted confidant—and often, a good friend.”

Investing in people and watching them grow

“One of the most satisfying aspects of my career has been seeing colleagues develop and thrive. Over the years, we’ve trained and mentored so many talented individuals—some have stayed and progressed with us, while others have moved on to build fantastic careers elsewhere. Knowing I’ve played a part in their journey is incredibly fulfilling.

We’re passionate about providing opportunities that help our people grow—both professionally and personally. Joining forces with a larger group has only strengthened our ability to nurture talent, offering our team more opportunities to excel in their chosen specialisms. In an industry where retaining talent is key to long-term success, I’m proud of the role we play in developing the next generation of accounting professionals.”

Face-to-face will always matter

“Technology has transformed the way we work, making businesses more efficient and freeing up more time for what really matters—advice. While automation and digital tools help streamline processes, they’ll never replace the value of sitting down with a client, having a real conversation, and truly understanding their needs. A good old-fashioned face-to-face meeting still makes all the difference when it comes to delivering personal, tailored advice.”

A bold new chapter

“AAB’s expansion into the North West is a challenge, but one that brings huge potential. Building our reputation in the region, expanding our service offering, and ensuring we continue to deliver the highest level of client support—this next phase of growth is something I’m thrilled to be a part of.”

The best compliment you can get

“Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to work with fantastic clients who truly value what we do. The biggest compliment? When they see us as part of their team. I’ve had clients say, “Without you, we’d be lost,” or “We trust you completely to ensure all our financial affairs are in order.” That level of trust is something I never take for granted—it’s what makes this job so rewarding.”

More than just ‘bean counters’

“One phrase we hear all too often as accountants is that we’re just “bean counters.” To anyone who still thinks that, I’d say—clearly, you haven’t met many modern-day accountants! Today’s accountants are strategic advisors, problem solvers, and trusted partners in business success. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about helping clients achieve their ambitions, plan for the future, and overcome challenges with confidence.

And that’s what I love most about this profession—making a real difference to businesses and the people behind them.”
