Family Business: Why Family Business Succession Fails (and How to Fix It)

Meet the Private Client team
Individuals. Families. Entrepreneurs. Globally mobile clients. Owner-managed businesses. High-net-worth individuals.
Tax Compliance. Tax Returns. Tax Planning. Tax advisory.
Based in our Glasgow office, Nicola Noble is a Private Client Tax manager at AAB, supporting high net worth individuals, globally mobile clients and owner-managed businesses with their UK tax affairs. Day-to-Day, Nicola works across cross-team collaboration and broader advisory projects, allowing her to deliver well-rounded, joined-up support to clients.
Nicola pursued a career in private client tax because she values interaction, relationships and variety. After time away from private client work, she realised how much she missed working closely with different teams, colleagues and clients, as well as the satisfaction that comes from helping real people navigate complex rules. Keen to retain and deepen her tax knowledge, Nicola returned to private client tax to combine technical challenge with meaningful client relationships. Her work is driven by a desire to simplify complexity, offer reassurance and make a genuine difference to the people she advises.
“I believe great tax advice starts with strong relationships. For me, building trust means showing a genuine interest in my clients as people, not just as names on a tax return. I take the time to listen, ask questions and understand what matters most to them, whether that’s family, business, future plans or peace of mind.
I think regular contact is non-negotiable. I don’t believe clients should only hear from their adviser when information is needed or deadlines are looming. Staying in touch helps clients feel supported and avoids surprises, which is especially important when dealing with tax.”
“One of my most rewarding client relationships was with a husband and wife whose tax affairs I looked after for several years. By getting to know them beyond the numbers, remembering important events in their lives and keeping conversations relaxed and two-way, trust developed naturally. I knew their phone number off by heart and always answered the phone using their names. Those small details made a big difference and turned a compliance task into a genuine partnership.”
“My strengths lie in client-centred communication, loyalty, and bringing out the best in me and in others. Tax can feel overwhelming, particularly when rules change frequently or when personal circumstances are complex. I aim to simplify the language, explain the “why” behind the rules and help clients understand their options clearly.
I’m responsive, organised and realistic about managing expectations. Clients value knowing where they stand and what comes next, and I work hard to provide that clarity. Technically, I bring broad UK tax experience, including residence and domicile matters, which is particularly valuable for internationally mobile clients or those with more complex personal affairs.”
“One of the biggest challenges in my career – and in private client tax generally – is keeping up with ever-changing legislation. Budgets, reforms and HMRC guidance mean the landscape is constantly shifting. Rather than seeing this as a frustration, I view it as an opportunity to add value.
I stay up to date through continuous technical reading, industry updates and collaboration with colleagues across AAB. This allows me to be proactive rather than reactive, anticipating how changes might affect clients and helping them plan accordingly. My approach balances compliance today with thoughtful planning for tomorrow, so clients can make informed decisions with confidence.”
“The greatest compliment I’ve received came not directly from a client, but from their son. In a letter to the partner of a previous firm, he described me as a trusted and supportive adviser to his late father, noting how much confidence my guidance gave him and how genuinely cared for he felt. Knowing that my professionalism and empathy made a difference during his lifetime is something I’m incredibly proud of, and it shapes how I work with every client.”
“What stands out to me most about AAB is, quite simply, the people. From day one, I’ve felt welcomed and supported by both my immediate team and the wider firm. There’s a genuine sense of collaboration, approachability and humour, which makes a real difference in a demanding profession.
When teams work well together, advice is better, more joined-up and more forward-thinking. I’m excited to continue growing at AAB and contributing to a firm where people and relationships truly matter.”
“One misconception I’d love to clear up is that tax professionals are boring or somehow work with HMRC to make people pay more tax. Tax professionals, especially in January, definitely require a sense of humour. Our role is to make the process as painless as possible, ensure compliance and identify tax efficiencies where appropriate.”
“I’m excited to see how tax automation, AI and digital collaboration continue to shape the profession. Technology has the potential to streamline compliance, reduce risk and free up more time for meaningful advisory conversations. Developing in these areas allows me to support clients more efficiently while maintaining the personal service they value.”
