Meet the Payroll & Employment team

Leah Simpson is a Global Employment Tax Assistant Manager, based in our Aberdeen office she supports employers with a wide range of employment tax matters. Her role covers everything from benefits and expenses, off-payroll working and CIS, through to overall employment tax compliance.
She also works closely with teams across the firm on due diligence projects, helping identify employment tax risks early and supporting clients to address them with confidence. Leah was drawn to the problem-solving side of the profession. Tax requires creativity, sound judgement and the ability to think differently, especially when dealing with complex or unclear legislation. That’s what keeps her motivated.
“Employment tax legislation can be highly subjective, which often leaves employers feeling uncertain or overwhelmed. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is how valuable it is to have a specialist who can cut through that uncertainty.
My role is to clearly explain the key points, outline the risks and give clients the confidence to make the right decisions for their business. I want clients to feel supported, informed and reassured that they’re doing things properly.”
Being approachable is a non-negotiable for me. Tax can feel daunting, so I focus on breaking things down into clear, manageable steps and meeting clients where they are.
“The most satisfying part of my role is building strong client relationships and being trusted to help solve problems. That trust comes from clear communication and delivering ahead of expectations.
Whether I’m working with a long-standing client or someone new, I aim to be a friendly, supportive presence. Clients know they can come to me with questions, no matter how small, and I’ll take the time to help.”
Recently, I’ve supported several clients with mock HMRC-style Employer Duties reviews. These reviews help identify potential weaknesses before HMRC does, allowing clients to strengthen their processes and reduce risk. Taking a collaborative and supportive approach puts clients at ease and leads to practical, tailored recommendations. I
“There’s a misconception that tax is boring. The legislation might not always be thrilling, but no two days are the same. Every client is different, and every challenge requires a fresh way of thinking. I’ve always enjoyed being creative, and when I came across a career in tax, I remember reading that tax advisors had to be creative thinkers in order to solve complex problems and think outside the box. That’s what drew me to this career.
What I love most is being able to help clients day in, day out, acting as a trusted advisor and problem solver. That human element is what makes the role so rewarding.”
“I bring a positive attitude to everything I do. I enjoy tackling new challenges, and no query has ever put me off finding the right answer for a client. Whilst it might not sound the most exciting, I do love getting stuck into research and legislation to support with complex tax problems. This allows me to go the extra mile to make sure I get it right for my clients.
I’m keen to continue developing my technical knowledge and to keep an eye on future policy changes that will shape how businesses build and manage their workforces. Employment tax is always evolving, and staying curious is key.
I’m proud to be part of a firm that values teamwork, resilience and doing the right thing for clients. That shared mindset makes a real difference, both to the work we deliver and the relationships we build.”
