“I aim to help clients save on tax & give them peace of mind”

Jen Unsworth is a Private Client Senior Manager based in our Bolton office. Working across a wide range of sectors, Jen is a personable and proactive tax specialist. Jen leads tax compliance, handling Capital Gains Tax (CGT), Inheritance Tax (IHT), trusts, P11Ds, and self‑assessment filings to name a few of her responsibilities. In addition to her daily responsibilities, Jen also acts as a trusted advisor to Partners at AAB, supporting them on complex tax scenarios across a varied client base.

With 17 years of experience, Jen balances the compliance‑heavy nature of her work with a client‑focused mindset, consistently delivering efficient, high‑quality results for her clients.

A trusted advisor

“I pride myself on being an approachable communicator and a true people person. Clients know they can always pick up the phone with any question, no matter how big or small.

With more than a decade and a half in tax, I’ve encountered countless scenarios and regulations. That experience means I can draw on real-world insight to advise clients confidently and practically.

I’ve helped clients who haven’t had accountants before, steering them through penalties and ensuring their personal finances stay protected. A recent example involved clients with multiple rental properties. I know that the disclosures can be daunting, but working through them together gave the clients real peace of mind.”

Building client relationships

“Communication is key for me. I make sure to introduce myself via email or phone and let clients know I’m there for them from day one. They appreciate the openness, that they can rely on me for guidance and reassurance.”

Proactive & on the ball

“Tax legislation and software are always evolving, and that’s one of the greatest challenges I face in my role. But, I stay ahead by attending internal training sessions, keeping up to date with rule changes, and exploring new technology and tools like AI to see how we can streamline our processes.

When changes are announced, I proactively identify which clients will be affected and reach out to mitigate any surprises.”

Value in variety

“In a typical week, I might split my time between preparing CGT returns, checking self-assessment submissions, advising on IHT issues, and reviewing trust arrangements. I’ll also be helping the team with P11D calculations or with any questions that arise. No two weeks are the same at AAB, and I think there is value in working with a diverse client base.

I also do some Partner‑level advisory work, which ranges from interpreting tax legislation to helping clients understand the impact of recent regulations on their affairs. It’s a dynamic, varied role, with deadlines and surprises along the way, but I thrive on it.”

How I got here

“I actually fell into tax by chance when looking into a career in accountancy. I stumbled across the tax‑focused job description and realised how much I’d enjoy it. That was the beginning of my 17‑year journey in tax, and I’ve never looked back. The challenge of working in an ever-changing landscape, coupled with the satisfaction of helping clients, continues to motivate me and I find it really fulfilling work.”

Collaborative culture

“The team‑centric culture at AAB is something I value. We collaborate and I find that it brings out the best in each other, and that ripple effect always benefits our clients. It’s inspiring to work in an environment where support and mentorship are valued.”

Clearing up misconceptions

“Many people think tax is dull or just “numbers for the Revenue.” But in reality, it’s a an ever‑changing field full of interesting opportunities. From trust planning to AI integrations, it never gets boring.”

Looking ahead

“I’m excited to be part of the AAB team and continuing to learn from my colleagues and our diverse clients. In the tax world in particular, I’m eager to explore how AI can enhance tax efficiency and support clients in making informed decisions.”
