A Candid Conversation on the Future of Family Businesses
AAB / Our Team / Jamie Stanford
Private individuals. Families. Business owners. Senior executives.
Financial planning. Retirement modelling. Investment strategies. Tax planning.
Jamie Stanford is a Chartered Financial Planner based in our London Gatwick office, helping clients navigate life’s major transitions with confidence, clarity, and a plan that truly reflects their goals. His role involves a blend of new and ongoing client meetings, strategic planning sessions, and collaboration with the wider team to ensure portfolios remain aligned with each client’s evolving circumstances. Much of his time is spent reviewing and refining financial plans, particularly for clients approaching key life milestones such as retirement, selling a business, or passing wealth to the next generation.
“I always begin by really understanding what matters to a client, not just financially, but personally. It’s not enough to know their balance sheet; I need to know their values, priorities, and what keeps them up at night. That active listening builds trust from the start and ensures my advice is truly tailored.
I learned early in my career that numbers alone don’t create lasting client relationships. You have to connect on a human level. That’s where the trust is built, and that’s what sustains a relationship over the years.”
“One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping clients through difficult, unplanned changes. I once worked with a couple who were in the process of selling their business when one of them received a serious health diagnosis. It was a deeply emotional time, and they needed more than just financial advice, they needed reassurance and stability. By being available, honest, and compassionate, I was able to guide them through the process, adapt their plans, and help them feel secure about their future.
More recently, I supported a long-standing client facing an urgent decision about early retirement due to health concerns. We restructured their plan quickly, modelling multiple income scenarios so they could make an informed choice. They retired earlier than expected, confident they could still maintain their lifestyle. That’s the power of having a flexible, well-thought-out plan.”
“The most satisfying moment for me is when a client realises their goals are not just dreams, they’re achievable. You can see their shoulders relax and their whole perspective shift. That sense of relief and clarity is why I do this work.
It’s also why I value being part of the team. The collaborative culture means I can draw on colleagues’ expertise, whether that’s complex tax structuring, legal planning, or investment analysis, to deliver truly holistic solutions. That breadth of support ensures clients get the very best advice in every area.”
“Uncertainty is the biggest challenge in my profession, whether it comes from markets, legislation, or life itself. My role is to create plans that are resilient enough to weather those changes. That means building strong foundations, planning flexibly, and communicating clearly so clients always feel prepared, whatever comes next.
A common misconception about what I do is that financial planning is all about investments. While investments are important, real financial planning is about aligning money with values and life goals. The returns that matter most are often peace of mind, security, and the freedom to make life choices with confidence.”
“I’m excited about how technology can enhance the client experience without replacing the personal connection that’s at the heart of what I do. I’m exploring how AI tools and digital planning platforms can make financial planning more engaging and accessible, giving clients real-time insights while still benefiting from the guidance of a trusted adviser.
Ultimately, my role is about providing clarity through every stage of life, helping clients see their path clearly, navigate changes with confidence, and know that they have a plan that truly reflects what matters most to them.”
