Based in Edinburgh, Euan Middleton is an assistant manager in our Corporate Finance team. He has a diverse skillset having had experience on a number of mandates across a broad range of clients of varying sizes across different sectors.
Euan’s key specialisms include financial modelling which he has carried out for owner-managed businesses right up to FTSE 250 companies. His main responsibilities include ensuring we get the best deal for our clients in any transaction process and ensure the process runs smoothly and providing our clients with peace of mind. He also manages communications with all stakeholders during any transaction process to maintain transparency and trust.
“My definition of the ideal client relationship is one that is open and transparent, with clear lines of communication that helps me fully understand my clients’ goals and allows us to all work towards a common objective. Having an ongoing dialogue helps in staying ahead of issues and capitalizing on opportunities as they arise.”
“Clients expect me to provide them with a tailored service that takes into account their unique circumstances and needs. They expect me to be open and honest and be readily available to address concerns, answer questions, and provide timely advice.
“For me, the most satisfying aspects of working with clients is being able to play a part in the client achieving their strategic or personal goals gives me a great deal of satisfaction, particularly for owner-managed businesses.
When it comes to working with colleagues, I love to see my colleagues succeed in their various mandates, particularly as you can see how much time and effort they have put into projects. Furthermore, given the constantly evolving nature of corporate finance, there is always something to be learned from your colleagues’ experiences and being able to overcome hurdles collaboratively brings me a great sense of fulfilment.”
“With regards to different methods of communication and my preference, I always think that a tailored approach is required, meaning it varies from client to client. Whilst I believe that in-person meetings foster stronger relationships, I understand that they are not always the most efficient use of everyone’s time. In an ideal world, I would prefer any ‘kick-off’ meetings to be face-to-face to build up a good rapport followed by regular virtual meetings as the process continues. However, whether in-person or not, routine communication and check-ins are vital to providing the client peace of mind that all is well and in hand.”
“There is always something new to learn – to use the cliché phrase “every day is a learning day”. Whether it’s in a new transaction or a client’s niche requirement, there is always something that crops up. Being able to lean on colleagues and using their experience to understand the requirement is key to producing a solution in a timely manner that suits all parties.”
“Looking forward, it will certainly be exciting to see clients I have helped in the past and those I will help in the future grow and unlock further value and to know I have played a part in that growth journey will certainly put a smile on my face. I can’t think of a better place to be able to do that at a company like AAB within a great Corporate Finance team.
The journey that AAB has been on since I have joined and the ambitious growth plan that we feel we are all a part of certainly excites me. Meeting new people through our acquisition strategy, combined with clearly defined and communicated goals for organic growth, gives everyone at the AAB something to strive for, and it’s great seeing colleagues grow. I am confident we will feel a great sense of achievement when we reach these goals.”
“Given the constantly evolving nature of transactions and niche requirements each different client may have, being able to lean colleagues and using their experience to understand the requirement is key to producing a solution in a timely manner that suits all parties. This collaboration is not just within the corporate finance team, but inter-service line collaboration is often where you learn the most. Whether it is understanding the various tax implications from my corporate tax colleagues or learning new modelling methods from BAG colleagues, there is always something new to be learned. This is one of the best things about working at AAB – the integrated service offering allows me to provide extra value to clients and personally allows me to build great internal friendships.”
“I pride myself in being fully committed to my clients and making myself available to them round the clock. Furthermore, my attention to detail combined with my technical detail allows me to provide valuable insights to my clients in a timely and efficient manner.”
“My work is so much more than boring spreadsheets! Whilst it is true that they play a large part in what we do (which I shamelessly enjoy), there is so much more to it. In order to succeed in this line of work, there is a requirement to build and maintain a network of relationships, not only with potential clients but also different lawyers and other advisors with whom it’s important to build up a good rapport with.”
