David Kay is an Audit Partner based in our Bolton office. With a career spanning nearly 40 years at Barlow Andrews, he works with clients of all sizes, providing expert guidance across a wide range of financial matters. With a particular specialism in audit, he plays a key role in overseeing the audit process, conducting top-level reviews, and leading final client meetings to ensure a seamless and valuable experience.

David also heads up the firm’s charity audit and assurance division in Bolton, supporting not-for-profit organisations in navigating their unique financial reporting challenges. He is passionate about making complex financial information accessible and helping charities make informed decisions.

Beyond client work, he takes great pride in career development, mentoring colleagues, and supporting the next generation of accountants. His dedication to both his clients and his team has been a defining feature of his career, making him a trusted and respected figure within the firm.

Gaining a real understanding of what makes clients tick

“For me, the ideal client relationship is built on real understanding. I take the time to understand what makes my clients tick, what their business is all about, and what drives them. That way, I can help them make the right decisions, whether it’s about growth, financial planning, or strategic direction. It’s about not getting too close, but close enough to have the right level of insight to truly support them in getting where they want to be.”

Advice that helps clients achieve more

“One of the most satisfying parts of my job is knowing that I’ve made a real difference. Whether it’s ensuring clients don’t pay more tax than they should, acting as a trusted sounding board, or offering advice that helps them through a difficult time, I find genuine satisfaction in seeing clients succeed. It’s about more than just numbers- it’s about adding value, being someone they can rely on and making sure they know I’m there to help them.”

Lending a hand to the next generation

“Seeing colleagues develop and progress in their careers is something I take a lot of pride in. I’ve been fortunate to work with many talented people over the years, and I like to think I’ve played some part in their success. When I see someone who works hard, wants to do well and is willing to learn, I’ll always be there to support them. Offering guidance, sharing knowledge and helping them take the next step in their careers is something that brings real satisfaction.”

Making Complex Financial Information Clear

“One of the biggest challenges in my line of work is in the charity and not-for-profit sector. Charities have faced significant struggles in recent years, particularly with funding, and that can sometimes mean they don’t invest in the financial services they need because they’re spending that money elsewhere on other necessities. On top of that, not everyone has a background in business or finance and if there’s one thing I know, it’s that financial reporting can be complex. My job is to break it all down—to make a complex set of accounts understandable, to explain financial risks in a way that makes sense, and to help organisations face challenges head-on. It’s about ensuring they have the right information to make the right decisions.”

Putting people first

“I want to see our team grow, develop, and achieve everything they’re capable of. I believe in creating real career opportunities—if someone works hard, pushes themselves, and strives to succeed, they should be able to achieve their goals. Throughout my career, I’ve seen so many people move through the ranks, from trainees to experienced professionals, and I take huge pride in seeing their success.”

The Best Compliment I’ve Ever Received

“One of the most memorable compliments I’ve received came from a client who was going through an incredibly tough time in business. He told me that without the advice and support I’d given him he wouldn’t have made it through. Hearing that kind of feedback is what makes this job so rewarding. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about being there when clients need you most.”
