A Candid Conversation on the Future of Family Businesses
AAB / Our Team / Colin Judd
High-net-worth individuals. Business owners. Senior executives.
Wealth management. Retirement planning. Intergenerational wealth transfer. Investment strategy.
Colin Judd is a Financial Planning Director based in our London office, providing strategic, holistic advice to help clients navigate life’s big transitions. With two decades of experience in financial planning, Colin works with high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and senior executives, many of whom are approaching retirement or managing significant life changes such as selling a business, receiving an inheritance, or planning wealth transfers between generations.
Colin’s time is often split between client meetings, strategic planning sessions, and mentoring junior advisers. He dedicates many hours to preparing and reviewing comprehensive financial plans, ensuring they remain aligned with clients’ evolving goals. He works hand in hand with tax and legal professionals to deliver joined-up advice, often addressing complex needs that require a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach. Some weeks focus on client reviews and performance analysis, others on onboarding new clients or refining investment strategies in response to market changes. But regardless of the task, Colin’s constant aim is to bring clarity, confidence, and calm to every financial decision.
“I always start by understanding a client’s ‘why.’ Before we talk numbers, I want to know what matters most to them: family, freedom, or legacy. That foundation of trust and empathy is non-negotiable.
For me, financial planning began with a fascination for how financial decisions shape lives. Over time, I came to realise that this profession allows me to combine technical expertise with meaningful human impact. Financial planning isn’t just about money; it’s about helping people live the lives they want with the security and freedom they need. When you understand what drives a client, you can design a plan that’s not just effective on paper but meaningful in real life.”
“One client came to me after selling their business, overwhelmed by the complexity of their new financial situation. We took the time to map out their goals, simplify their portfolio, and build a tax-efficient income strategy. Over time, that relationship grew into one of deep trust, they now refer their children and friends to me.
What made it work was consistency, transparency, and being available when it mattered most. For me, the most rewarding moments are when clients realise their goals aren’t just dreams, they’re achievable.”
“Many of my clients are navigating complex changes in their lives. A recent example involved a client navigating a difficult divorce while trying to protect their long-term financial security. I worked closely with their solicitor to secure a fair settlement, restructured their investments, and built a new financial plan that gave them peace of mind and a fresh start.
The greatest compliment I’ve ever had from a client was, ‘You’ve helped me sleep at night.’ That’s what it’s all about, knowing that our work gives people the reassurance and confidence to move forward.”
“One of the biggest challenges in financial planning is helping clients stay focused on long-term goals when the world is full of short-term noise. I approach this through education, regular communication, and a disciplined planning process that keeps emotions in check.
I also believe strongly in mentoring younger advisers and contributing to the strategic direction of the firm. I’m particularly interested in how technology can enhance the client experience, from intuitive planning tools or better data visualisation. I also have a keen interest in exploring sustainable investing trends and how they align with clients’
