Software and Systems Assistant Manager

Charlie Bowler

Who I help

Payroll clients. Internal AAB team.

How I help

Integrate client systems. Improve processes. Connect systems.

“I love figuring out the most efficient ways of working”.

Charlie Bowler is a Software and Systems Assistant Manager based in our Aberdeen
office. He is responsible for designing and implementing integrations between payroll
systems and client platforms. His role guarantees client data flows seamlessly between
systems without requiring any manual input from the clients themselves. To achieve this,
he extracts, processes and transfers data securely and efficiently, minimising errors or
delays. He carefully builds these integrations to improve automation, reducing the
workload for both clients and internal teams.

Alongside integrations, Charlie manages and maintains the company’s data warehouse.
By keeping the data warehouse structured and up to date, he ensures that reports are
accurate, insightful, and readily available when needed. For Charlie, being able to ensure
data is secure and always accessible when necessary means we can guarantee a high
level of service for not only our internal teams but also our external clients, which for him
is a job well done.

Finding a solution is our passion

“I’m a firm believer that the best client relationships are built on trust and expertise. I
want clients to feel confident that we can provide the right solutions, even when they
are not entirely sure what they need. It’s a bit like “mind-reading” as we start
by gaining an understanding of their data, their systems, and their challenges. Once we
have that in depth understanding of their business, we’re then able to offer solutions that
they might not have even considered that will help them to be more effective and efficient.
The goal is to help them get the absolute best out of their setup without them having to
worry about the technical details. For me, there’s nothing more rewarding than solving a
complex problem for a client. Giving them the solutions they need to succeed. It’s a great
feeling knowing that I had a hand in making their processes easier and especially when I
know we’ve helped them to overcome a challenge.”

Virtual and hands-on work

“Due to the nature of my work, I lean more towards the virtual side of working. Having the
option to jump on a call, share screens or work on documents together makes problem-solving quicker and more efficient. It removes some of the time we would usually spend
arranging to get around one screen together. However, there are times when being in the
office and working closely with teams is extremely valuable. That’s what I appreciate
about AAB – the flexibility to choose what works best for a client or project.”

Problem-solving makes work so rewarding

“A challenge that we sometimes come across is the initial integration with a client’s
systems. Each and every integration is different, even for clients that are largely similar,
as they all come with their own requirements, processes and setups. While this can often
present a challenge initially as we familiarise ourselves with the system, it also presents
an opportunity. I get the opportunity to learn their system and get to know it from an
outsider’s perspective, which means that I can identify strengths and weaknesses and
provide suggestions and solutions to make it more efficient for them as well. It’s so
rewarding when the integration is complete, and you can see everything you’ve worked
hard to achieve coming together.”

Looking ahead: Excited for what the future holds

“For me, being involved in a firm that places technology at its core is really exciting. Tech
is constantly evolving, and I can’t wait to see what new tools and software we get to
explore. I love learning new processes and figuring out the most efficient ways of working.
I’m excited to see where AAB goes next and what new locations and businesses we get
involved in. We have a wide variety of clients, and it’s always exciting to work with so many
kinds of people and industries.”

Approachable, collaborative and driven

“I’m an approachable person. Whether it’s my clients or teammates, I’m always happy
to lend a hand to collaborate with anyone, no matter the issue. One of the greatest
compliments I’ve gotten from a client is when they’ve thanked me for solving a problem
they’d been dealing with. They had mentioned I had gone the extra mile to figure out what
was wrong. It feels good to know I can make a real difference like that.

What frustrates me the most is the stereotype of my profession being perceived as a
“nerd”. Whilst I do have a passion for technology, I believe it’s important to recognise
that this field attracts a diverse range of individuals with various skills and personalities.
I believe embracing the diversity of us all creates a more inclusive and well-rounded work
environment.”
