“COLLABORATION IS OUR SUPERPOWER.”

Catriona McKavanagh is a Business Advisory Senior Manager based in our Mallusk office. Catriona works with the team to ensure our clients meet their statutory deadlines and receive any assistance they require to help them make informed business decisions, ranging from incorporation or succession planning. In addition to overseeing and reviewing the day-to-day work, her role also involves coaching and developing team members to help them grow professionally.

BUILDING STRONG CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS

“The ideal relationship with a client is one where mutual trust and understanding have been established. I want my clients to feel that I’m an extension of their business—someone they can rely on, who truly understands their challenges and goals.

Clear, open communication is essential. When we work together in a way that encourages discussion and problem-solving, we create a partnership that benefits their business long-term. It’s always rewarding to see how the right advice and support can improve a client’s operations and, in some cases, even their quality of life. Seeing a client succeed—especially when we’ve helped them overcome challenges—is the most satisfying part of the job.”

A TEAM THAT SUPPORTS, LEARNS, AND GROWS TOGETHER

“I enjoy helping and supporting my colleagues, whether it’s sharing knowledge, solving a problem, or mentoring a team member as they grow in their role. We work in an industry where learning never stops, and I firmly believe that knowledge should be shared so we can all develop our skills together.

One of the most important parts of my role is coaching and developing team members. Supporting my colleagues to improve their skills and confidence not only benefits them but also strengthens our entire team. The more we learn from each other, the better we can serve our clients.”

A PROACTIVE AND INNOVATIVE APPROACH

“I like to get things done quickly and efficiently, and that means giving my clients the confidence to be decisive. Too often, businesses hesitate over decisions because they’re unsure of the right course of action. My role is to provide the clarity and guidance they need to move forward with confidence.

I also challenge the idea of doing things a certain way just because ‘that’s how it’s always been done.’ I enjoy finding creative solutions and encouraging both clients and colleagues to explore new approaches that might be more efficient or effective. Just because a process has worked in the past doesn’t mean it’s the best option for the future.”

BALANCING TECH AND PERSONAL CONNECTIONS

“The use of technology is great for efficiency, accuracy, and refining processes, but I strongly believe that nothing replaces the personal aspect of face-to-face interactions. In-person meetings allow for deeper discussions, uncovering challenges that might not come up in an email or a video call.

At the same time, technology gives our clients flexibility in how and when they communicate with us. It allows for quick responses, streamlined processes, and a more dynamic way of working. My goal is always to strike the right balance—using technology to enhance our efficiency while maintaining strong personal relationships with clients.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

“The greatest challenge in my role is keeping up with the ever-evolving technology landscape, particularly automation and AI. As these tools become more advanced, it’s essential to understand how they can best serve our clients. Rather than seeing technology as a challenge, I view it as an opportunity—to improve processes, save time, and provide even more value to businesses.

Personally, I’m excited about working more closely with teams across AAB. Collaboration is such a key part of what we do, and by working together, we can ensure our clients receive the best possible advice while also expanding our own knowledge. AAB itself is a dynamic and rapidly expanding firm, which makes every day different and exciting. It’s a great place to work, knowing that there are always new opportunities to grow.”

ITS ABOUT SEEING THE BIGGER PICTURE

“There’s a stereotype that accountants are dull and spend all their time buried in spreadsheets. In reality, our work is incredibly varied. We’re constantly interacting with clients, helping them grow their businesses, solving problems, and developing strategies that will have a real impact.

What we do goes beyond numbers—it’s about seeing the bigger picture. Whether it’s tax savings, digital transformation, business expansion, or succession planning, we play a key role in helping clients shape their futures. I love being part of that process and challenging outdated perceptions of what it means to be an accountant.”

MAKING AN IMPACT

“There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you’ve made a real difference to someone’s business. One of the greatest compliments I’ve received was when a client told me, ‘I don’t know what I’d do without you—you keep me right.’ Hearing that kind of feedback reinforces why I do what I do.

At the end of the day, my job is to provide guidance and support that makes clients’ lives easier. Whether it’s helping them navigate a complex financial decision or ensuring they meet their deadlines stress-free, my focus is always on delivering real value.”
