A Candid Conversation on the Future of Family Businesses
AAB / Our Team / Amber Clouston
Meet the Business Advisory team
SMEs. Owner-managed businesses. Family businesses.
Personal and Corporate Tax compliance. Tax planning. HMRC tax investigations and disclosures.
Amber Clouston is a Business Advisory Assistant Manager based in our Aberdeen office. Amber supports a wide range of clients, particularly owner-managed businesses, by offering tailored tax advice that aligns with their business ambitions. Her role spans compliance, planning, and specialist support during HMRC investigations and disclosures.
With a strong academic foundation and dual qualifications as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor, Amber blends technical knowledge with a deep understanding of her clients’ challenges and opportunities. She works closely with clients to ensure their tax affairs are accurate, efficient, and structured in a way that helps them reach their long-term business goals.
“What I love most about my role is that every week brings something different. One day I might be helping a client with tax planning so they can extract profits from their business efficiently. The next, I could be supporting someone through an HMRC investigation. I really enjoy being involved in both personal and business tax, as it gives me a broader understanding of my clients’ needs and how best to support them.
I work closely with our Tax Investigations team, helping clients disclose previously undeclared income or respond to HMRC enquiries. These can be stressful situations for people, so I take pride in removing some of that stress and achieving positive outcomes, whether that’s reducing penalties or negotiating a more favourable settlement.”
“For me, building strong client relationships starts with one simple thing: listening. Every client is different, and understanding their goals, challenges, and expectations helps me deliver advice that’s genuinely useful.
I’ve built long-term relationships just by being there for clients when they need someone. Whether that’s answering questions, providing reassurance during difficult periods, or offering clarity in a complex area like tax. Clients want to feel they have a trusted advisor in their corner, and that’s a role I take seriously.”
“Coming from a small remote community, I’ve always admired the hard work and determination behind owner-managed businesses. I loved studying accounts and business management at school, which naturally led me into accountancy at university. I discovered early on that tax was where I excelled – it’s where numbers meet strategy, and I knew it was the path for me.
Joining AAB was the perfect move. It’s a place where I’ve been able to grow quickly, completing my dual qualifications within three years of graduating. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and even more excited about what’s ahead.”
“One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is helping clients through difficult situations. For example, I recently supported someone with a six-year HMRC enquiry. They’d been losing sleep over it, worried about what they might owe. I managed the entire disclosure process, prepared the necessary calculations, and negotiated with HMRC, ultimately reducing their expected payment from a four-figure to a low three-figure sum. The client was incredibly relieved and grateful, and that’s what makes the job so worthwhile.
Whether it’s late filing, penalty mitigation or full investigations, I’m here to reduce stress, offer solutions, and get things back on track for my clients.”
“A common misconception is that tax advisors just send your money off to HMRC. In reality, our role is to help you keep more of what you earn while removing any worry of non-compliance.
Many business owners want to extract cash in the most tax-efficient way possible, and I help them understand the available options, along with the rules and risks involved. Communication and transparency are essential. We’ll always discuss your goals and work together on a plan that makes sense for you.”
“I’m known for being approachable, organised, and solutions-focused. I genuinely enjoy problem-solving and working as part of a wider team, both within AAB and with my clients. I see myself as a forward-thinker – I don’t just look at what’s happening today but consider how I can support my clients plans for tomorrow.
AAB is the ideal place to do this because of the breadth of expertise across the business. If a client needs something beyond my specialism, I know I can bring in colleagues who are the best at what they do. Together, we deliver a truly joined-up service.”
“I’m excited about continuing to develop my advisory skills and broadening the range of support I can offer. My goal is always to give clients advice that’s proactive, practical, and personal, so they can focus on growing their businesses, with peace of mind that their tax affairs are in safe hands.”
