“I love helping businesses streamline their systems and work more efficiently.”

Alison Cornes is an Audit Partner and Head of Audit in our Bolton office. She specialises in supporting owner-managed businesses taking a proactive approach to working with both clients and the audit team, she ensures that audits run smoothly from start to finish. Beyond Owner managed businesses Alison also works closely with not-for-profit organisations and oversees Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) assignments, providing expert guidance every step of the way.

Her role goes beyond just delivering audits- she’s deeply involved in supporting and mentoring the next generation of accountants. Alison ensures that trainees receive the best possible start in their careers, helping them navigate the challenges of the apprenticeship scheme and setting them up for success.

Going the extra mile for clients

“For me, the best client relationships are built on mutual respect. I always go the extra mile to make sure deadlines, no matter how tight, are met. But I’ve found that when you build strong relationships, clients are just as invested in making things work. It’s a team effort, and I love working alongside them to get things over the line.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing my clients grow. Helping them through difficult periods and seeing them come out stronger is incredibly satisfying. When a client is facing a challenge, I want to be the person who helps them find a way through it. Watching them flourish after overcoming obstacles makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Investing in the next generation

“I’m really passionate about supporting our trainees. I often meet them at the interview stage and follow their journey all the way through to qualification. Seeing their confidence grow is fantastic, and there’s nothing better than celebrating with them when they achieve their goals.

But the journey doesn’t stop there. I love seeing what comes next—whether they stay and progress within the firm or take their skills overseas. We’ve had several trainees move abroad to further their careers, and I take real pride in knowing that we’ve helped give them the foundation to do that.”

Embracing technology—with a personal touch

“I’m a big advocate for using technology to make audit more efficient, and I’ll always champion digital solutions where they add value. But I also recognise that not all clients feel comfortable with tech, and I never take a one-size-fits-all approach.

Some businesses prefer a more hands-on, traditional method, and that’s completely fine. I work with each client to find the right balance—whether that’s embracing digital tools, sticking to a more personal approach, or combining both. The key is making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.”

Making financial reporting clear for Non-Profits

“A big part of my work is with not-for-profit organisations, and I know that financial reporting can sometimes feel overwhelming—especially for trustees who aren’t from a financial background.

That’s why I take the time to explain things in a way that makes sense, answering their questions and ensuring they feel comfortable with any recommendations. My aim is to give them the confidence to make informed decisions so they can focus on the important work they do in their communities.”

Creating a lasting impression

“One of the best compliments I’ve ever received came from two different clients—a not-for-profit organisation and an owner-managed business—who both told me the same thing: “We wish we had found you years ago.” That really stuck with me, because it means I’m making a real difference to the businesses I work with. And at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.”

Changing perceptions of audit

“There’s a perception that audit is boring, but I completely disagree. No two audits are ever the same, even when working with the same client year after year. The process is constantly evolving, offering opportunities to dig deeper, refine systems, and build stronger client relationships.

For me, audit isn’t just about checking numbers—it’s about adding value. I love being able to show businesses how they can improve their systems and operate more efficiently. It’s a crucial part of the accounting industry, giving clients confidence in their figures and helping them make better business decisions. Audit isn’t just a job for me—it’s a way to make a real impact. And that’s what makes it exciting.”
