“Complex challenges don’t last – the right solutions do.”

Adam Flight is a Payroll Partner based in London bringing over 20 years of experience across in-house HR and payroll functions, people consulting and payroll bureau environments. Adam is passionate about guiding businesses through complexity with confidence. His approach is grounded in the belief that even the most challenging payroll or HR issues can be resolved with the right expertise, the right people and a clear plan forward.

Building bridges across people & payroll

“As Payroll Partner, my role is varied and highly collaborative. I work closely with internal partners across payroll and the wider employment, pay and people team, helping to integrate our various services, align processes and bring the right experts together. My background in HR means I can bridge the gap between payroll and people consulting, ensuring clients benefit from a joined-up, commercially focused approach.

I’m particularly focused on strengthening our London presence and enhancing our offering locally. That includes supporting on tax and global mobility matters, learning and development, whistleblowing, corporate benefits, Health & Safety and people consulting work. I’m also involved in internal networking and business development, particularly around M&A opportunities where payroll and people considerations are critical.

No two weeks look the same and that’s exactly how I like it.”

A people-first career choice

“My route into payroll wasn’t accidental. I had to choose between finance, marketing, sales or HR at college. I knew from part-time jobs that I was good at talking to people and building rapport, so HR felt like the natural fit. Over time, that specialism evolved into a combined focus on HR and payroll.

Having worked in-house in both functions before moving into outsourced consulting and bureau environments, I’ve seen first-hand the pressures businesses face. I understand the practical challenges, the resource constraints and the genuine worry that can come when something doesn’t feel quite right. That experience shapes how I support clients today.”

Understanding what keeps clients awake at night

“Like I’ve mentioned above, I’ve sat in my clients’ shoes, so I know their pain points. I know how disruptive payroll errors can be. I know how complex HR legislation has become. And I know how isolating those challenges can feel for directors and business owners.

Clients don’t need someone who claims to have every answer. They need someone who understands the issue, builds confidence and brings the right expertise around the table. I focus on instilling that confidence in myself, in the different teams and in the solutions we provide.

For me, it’s important to understand that clients are buying into the person as much as the firm. Trust, passion and follow-through matters.”

Listening first, advising second

“When building relationships with clients, I’m conscious to let them do most of the talking. Giving people the space to explain why they’re retendering, what their current pain points are, or what’s changed in their business often reveals far more than a standard checklist ever could.

I focus on the ‘Why now?’, ‘What’s not working?’ . The more I understand the root cause, the better the bespoke solution we can provide.”

Turning problems into turning points

“A client had completely lost confidence in their payroll provider. Through an existing relationship, I was able to step in, manage the transition and move payroll across smoothly.

It wasn’t just about switching providers. We reviewed historic payroll data, identified and corrected backdated issues, and ensured employees were not negatively impacted. We put proactive measures in place so the same issues wouldn’t resurface, and the result is exactly why I do what I do. Stability and confidence were restored and both the internal finance and HR team that could focus on running the business rather than firefighting.”

The greatest compliment

“The most rewarding feedback I’ve received from clients is when they tell me they simply don’t worry about payroll or HR anymore. They know their people will be paid accurately and on time. They know that if an issue arises, their managers have someone they can call.

For me, that’s success – providing reassurance, clarity and outcomes that allow business leaders to focus on growth.”

More than red tape

“One of the biggest misconceptions I’d love to clear up is that HR is simply a bureaucratic function wrapped in red tape. It isn’t. Done well, HR protects the business, minimises risk, enables growth and results in a happy workforce.

Similarly, payroll isn’t something that happens at the click of a button. Legislation is constantly evolving, compliance expectations are increasing and the financial risk of getting it wrong continues to grow. Many organisations underestimate just how complex payroll has become.

My role is to help clients understand those risks, not to alarm them, but to empower them. They don’t have to manage everything themselves. With the right support and integrations, payroll and HR can become strengths rather than stress points.”

Strength in connection

“If there’s one thing I pride myself on its building strong internal networks. I genuinely enjoy connecting with people across the firm. I like being the person who either knows the answer and can help or knows who to ask.

It’s impossible to know everything and I learned that lesson early in my career. What matters is knowing how to bring the right specialists together to deliver the best outcome for clients.

At AAB, that collaborative mindset is part of the culture. The ambition of the firm and the positive attitude across teams make it an exciting place to be. Everyone is working towards the same direction, and that shared ambition is powerful.”

Smarter systems, better outcomes

“I’m particularly interested in how technologies can create efficiencies. Whether that’s maximising existing systems or integrating new ones, I’m always looking for ways to create efficiencies, improve collaboration and remove silos.”
