Managing Organisational Change

BLOG18th Sep 2023

The description of the business environment as volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) has been pervasive in thought leadership on change management in recent years. Indeed, the changing fortunes of organisations in the wake of the Covid pandemic, Brexit, and the ever-shifting economic landscape have given further weight to this characterisation. It is of little surprise, therefore, that a recent survey by Gartner revealed that managing organisational change remains the top priority for over half (53%) of the 800 business leaders surveyed (Gartner, 2023).

However, just how prepared are businesses to respond to any seismic shifts in the landscape? McKinsey’s State of Organisations 2023 report highlighted that just half of the 2500 leaders they polled said they were well prepared to forecast and respond to “external shocks” (McKinsey, 2023).

One possible solution to enhance organisational agility is to develop a change management “toolkit” that can be readily deployed in response to emerging trends. The latest interactive workshop in our Think People Academy will introduce participants to a range of tools to enable them to: –

  • Conduct a robust environmental analysis – reviewing both internal and external factors acting upon the organisation will allow attendees to gather a full and rounded appraisal of the landscape the organisation is operating in
  • Identify potential opportunities for change through an assessment of the environmental analysis – this will hold attendees to consider what will make the greatest difference to the organisation
  • Weigh up the risks and benefits associated with opportunities for change using a structured framework – thus enabling attendees to develop a reasoned and justifiable basis for progressing with a change initiative
  • Engage a range of stakeholders in buying into change – through conducting a stakeholder analysis, attendees will be encouraged to empathise with others’ perspectives
  • Mitigate and overcome barriers associated with implementing change – attendees will explore techniques for managing resistance to change
  • Develop a structured project management approach to implementing and sustaining change – introducing attendees to project management principles to enable a logical and structured approach to be taken from ideation to implementation of the change… and beyond!
  • Practise the soft skills associated with change management to manage change resistance and win “heads, hearts, and hands”
