Why Family Business Succession Fails (and how to fix it)
AAB / About / Our Team / Shane Brown
Assistant Manager
SMEs. Family-owned businesses. Sole traders. Group structures. Marketing Agencies. Entertainment. Pharmacies. Property companies.
Accounts preparation. VAT. Management accounts. Financial strategy. Problem resolution.
“Curiosity led me into accountancy.”
Shane is an Assistant Manager in our accounts team, supporting a wide range of clients with their day-to-day financial requirements. His role focuses on delivering accurate, timely financial information, alongside providing practical support across accounts preparation and VAT.
A typical week is a mix of monthly accounting, VAT work and accounts preparation for a broad range of clients, from small family-owned businesses to larger corporate groups. Much of his time is spent problem solving, reviewing figures and ensuring our clients have clear and reliable information. He is heavily focused on managing deadlines and maintaining consistency across a high volume of work, with each client bringing their own requirements and challenges.
Shane works with a diverse mix of SMEs across sectors including marketing, entertainment, pharmacies and property companies. This breadth of experience allows him to adapt his approach to different business needs and provide practical, relevant support regardless of the business size.
“I didn’t have a single lightbulb moment, but I’ve always been interested in how businesses operate and what drives their decisions. Accounting felt like the best way to understand that from the inside out.
Once I started, I found I really enjoyed the mix of structure, analysis and helping people make sense of their numbers.
My background in corporate audit gave me a strong foundation in understanding financial systems, controls and the bigger picture behind the numbers.
Now, working more closely with clients day to day, I combine that analytical approach with practical support, whether that’s preparing accounts, handling VAT or helping clients interpret their results clearly. It’s something I really enjoy.”
“I focus on being approachable and reliable from the start. Taking the time to understand how a client works helps build trust quickly. I’m genuinely interested, but I also need a strong level of knowledge about the nuances of their business in order to offer the best advice.
Clear communication and consistency go a long way, and clients value knowing they can get straightforward answers when they need them.
There’s a common misconception that accounting is just about ticking boxes or crunching numbers. In reality, it’s about understanding businesses, solving problems and helping people make good decisions for sustainable growth. We’re all about helping businesses grow and succeed.
There’s a real sense of achievement when you see a client progress, whether that’s hiring more staff, expanding, or reaching a point where they are acquired.”
“Starting my accounting career during COVID was a real challenge. Learning remotely, without the usual in-person support, meant I had to be proactive, ask questions and find my own ways to understand more complex areas.
It taught me resilience and independence early on, and those are skills I still rely on today.
I’m analytical, detail driven, and people stay I stay calm under pressure. That’s particularly important when working across multiple deadlines and ensuring everything is completed accurately.
I also value helping others who are learning, as it often helps strengthen my own understanding as well.”
“The culture of collaboration across the team and wider AAB is one of the most rewarding aspects of the role. Everyone is willing to help, share knowledge and support each other, and that’s great to be a part of.”
“I’m focused on continuing to develop my technical knowledge and staying up to date with new accounting tools and digital solutions. Anything that helps streamline processes or provide clearer insights for clients is something I’m keen to explore further.
I’ve always had an interest in technology, and AAB’s approach to innovation will enable me to build on that. I’m excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.”
