Why Family Business Succession Fails (and how to fix it)
AAB / About / Our Team / People / Steven McCormick
Senior HR Consultant
SMEs. International organisations.
Outsourced HR function. Team development. Employee relations management. Employment law compliance. Optimising HR processes. Recruitment & onboarding. HR & employment law training. Investigation and disciplinary procedures. Day-to-day HR queries.
“Communication is critical to offering clear, practical and effective HR advice.”
Steven McCormick is a Senior HR Consultant based in our Edinburgh office. He supports organisations with expert Human Resources (HR) and employment law advice that helps them manage, develop and support their people effectively. His work spans proactive HR planning, leadership guidance and day-to-day advice on employment matters, ensuring clients have the confidence to navigate complex workplace challenges.
A typical week in Steven’s role is varied. He may be delivering training sessions, developing HR strategies, advising managers on employee relations matters or helping organisations implement new policies and processes. This balance of proactive planning and responsive support ensures clients receive the guidance they need exactly when they need it.
Steven’s career in HR began unexpectedly. After starting in a sales role, he moved into a graduate HR position during an internal rotation, encouraged by a mentor who recognised that his strengths were better suited to people-focused work. What started as an opportunity quickly became a long-term career. More than a decade later, Steven continues to enjoy the variety and impact of HR, helping organisations build strong workplaces where both businesses and people can thrive.
“One of the first things I focus on when working with a new client is understanding how they communicate and how they prefer to work. Every organisation is different and adapting my approach to suit their style makes a huge difference in building a productive relationship.
Clear communication is essential in HR. Whether I’m advising on legislation, supporting a sensitive employee issue or helping implement new policies, clients need advice that is practical, understandable and aligned with their business culture.
By establishing that communication early, I’m able to provide guidance that feels relevant and supportive rather than overly technical or detached.”
“One of my top strengths is my experience working across multiple industries, which has helped me understand that while legislation remains consistent, the way it applies in practice often needs to be adapted to each organisation. I combine technical HR knowledge with an understanding of how businesses operate day to day. That balance helps ensure the advice I give is not only compliant but practical and effective.”
“HR can involve advising on situations that have very real impacts on individuals. Whether it’s resolving workplace issues, guiding managers through difficult conversations or helping organisations navigate complex employment matters, these situations require both expertise and empathy.
For me, the most important factor is ensuring every situation is approached fairly and thoughtfully. Using both knowledge and people skills helps ensure that decisions are made carefully, considering the wider impact on employees and the organisation.
That balanced approach helps businesses manage difficult circumstances while maintaining trust within their teams.”
“One of the biggest challenges in HR is the pace of change in employment legislation and workplace practices. Businesses need to remain compliant while also adapting to evolving expectations from employees.
At AAB, we work closely as a team to ensure our clients stay ahead of these changes. Through internal collaboration, specialist focus groups and client seminars, we provide guidance that helps organisations understand what’s coming and how to prepare for it.
My role is to translate these developments into practical actions for clients, ensuring they remain compliant while maintaining a positive working environment.”
“One of the most rewarding aspects of being part of AAB has been the opportunity to work within such a knowledgeable and supportive team.
Our Employment, People and Payroll specialists bring a wide range of expertise, allowing us to deliver comprehensive support for clients. That collaboration means we can offer more than individual advice – we can provide well-rounded solutions that consider every aspect of people management.
It’s also an environment where learning is encouraged. Being surrounded by colleagues with different specialisms continually strengthens the service we provide to clients.”
“The world of work is changing quickly, and I’m particularly interested in how technology and evolving workplace trends are shaping HR.
It wasn’t long ago that remote or hybrid working was rare. Businesses had to adapt quickly, and HR played a central role in supporting those changes. Staying informed about emerging HR technology and employment practices helps ensure the advice I give remains relevant.
Looking ahead, my focus is on understanding how organisations can prepare their HR strategies for future changes – ensuring they remain adaptable, resilient and supportive for both employers and employees.”
“One misconception I still occasionally hear about HR is that it’s simply about “hiring and firing”. In reality, the profession has evolved significantly.
Modern HR plays a strategic role in supporting organisations to build strong teams, create positive workplace cultures and manage change effectively. It’s about enabling businesses to succeed by supporting their people.
For me, HR is about partnership – working alongside organisations to create workplaces that are fair, compliant and productive.”
“One of the most satisfying aspects of working with clients is the variety of businesses I get to support. Every organisation is different, and every challenge presents an opportunity to help them move forward.
I enjoy learning about the work our clients do, understanding their goals and playing a small role in helping them achieve success. HR may often happen behind the scenes, but its impact can be significant.
Ultimately, my goal is to provide practical, reliable support that helps organisations feel confident in how they manage and develop their people – because when businesses support their people well, everything else tends to follow.”
