“In payroll, getting it right, on time, every time matters.”

With 28 years’ experience in payroll processing, Jonathan brings in depth technical and practical knowledge and to a role that is fundamental in every business. Supporting a broad and varied client base, he is responsible for ensuring payrolls are processed accurately and on time, regardless of complexity or scale.

His experience spans multiple sectors, including medical, manufacturing, construction and hospitality, working with companies ranging from small family-owned businesses to Irish corporates and multinationals with a presence in Ireland. This breadth of experience has given him a clear understanding of the nuances that can arise in payroll across different sectors. While the core principles of payroll remain largely the same, certain industries bring added layers of complexity, such as higher volumes of benefits-in-kind (BIK) in sectors with company vehicles, variable hours in hospitality, or industry-specific allowances and overtime structures.

No margin for error

“Payroll is one of those areas where there is no room for error. Staff rely on being paid correctly and on time, so accuracy and consistency are absolutely critical.

A typical week involves processing payrolls on a daily basis, often working to strict deadlines. Each client has their own requirements, whether that’s pay structures, benefits, or reporting, so you need to stay organised and detail-orientated at all times.

Over the years, I’ve developed a way of working that balances routine with flexibility, making sure everything is completed on time and correctly while still being able to respond quickly if something unexpected comes up.”

Experience that builds confidence

“Having worked in payroll for nearly three decades, you build up a strong sense of how things should work, but also where issues can arise.

That experience allows me to support clients more effectively, whether that’s identifying discrepancies early, ensuring compliance with new regulations, or simply providing reassurance that everything is being handled right.”

Keeping pace with change

“Payroll has become more complex in recent years, particularly with changes from Revenue around Enhanced Reporting Requirements (ERR) and the recent introduction of Pension Auto Enrolment, or MyFutureFund.

You need to stay on top of those changes, understand how they apply in practice, and make sure they’re implemented correctly for each client.

It’s not just about processing payroll anymore, it’s about ensuring compliance in an environment that’s constantly changing. For us, continuous learning and attention to detail are more important than ever.”

Relationships that make a difference

“Building strong client relationships comes down to being accessible. I always make sure clients can get in touch directly if they have a query.

That personal approach makes a big difference. It means clients feel supported and confident that their payroll is in safe hands. It also helps resolve issues more quickly, as you have a direct understanding of their business and how they operate.

Over time, that consistency helps build trust.”

Delivering tangible value

“One of the most satisfying aspects of the role is knowing that everything has been processed correctly and that employees are paid on time.

I also enjoy being able to resolve issues that have a real financial impact. For example, I recently helped a client secure a tax refund covering four years, after identifying that their tax credits had been incorrectly applied.

Being able to deliver that kind of outcome, where you’re adding value, is very rewarding.”

Strength through collaboration

“Being part of a wider team means there’s always a strong base of knowledge to draw from.

Having colleagues to collaborate with and share knowledge is incredibly valuable. It strengthens the service we provide and ensures clients benefit from a broader level of expertise.

It also creates opportunities to keep learning and developing.”

Looking ahead

“Payroll is constantly changing, whether through new legislation, evolving technologies or evolving client needs.

The focus for me is on continuing to deliver a reliable, accurate service while adapting to those changes.

Ultimately, it’s about providing consistency and peace of mind for clients, knowing that their payroll is being managed professionally, accurately, and growing alongside them as their businesses develop.”
