Why Family Business Succession Fails (and how to fix it)
AAB / About / Our Team / Justin Brady
Business Services Associate
Owner-managed companies. Family businesses. SMEs. Scaling companies. Irish subsidiaries of international groups.
Outsourced finance functions. Management accounts. Cashflow forecasting. Funding support. Business process improvement. Systems implementation.
“There’s always a solution. It’s about helping clients see it and act on it.”
Business Services Director, Justin Brady, brings over 30 years’ experience supporting businesses in Ireland and multinationals with an Irish presence. Having joined the firm at just 21, Justin has built his career within AAB, originally joining Ormsby & Rhodes, and progressing through a variety of roles and departments. This has given him a practical understanding of how businesses operate at every stage of their lifecycle, from start-up and scale-up through to succession and exit.
His role today is broad and hands-on, driven by both his experience and the evolving needs of his clients. Justin provides a fully outsourced finance function for many businesses, supporting them from core financial processes through to monthly management accounts, board reporting and strategic advisory. His work includes preparing cashflows and projections, while also advising on wider financial decisions such as growth planning, succession and business sales.
Alongside his client work, Justin has been closely involved in improving processes and supporting the adoption of more efficient ways of working. He has strong knowledge of cloud-based accountancy platforms and has helped many clients move from manual and desktop-based processes to more effective digital systems.
Known for his practical and solutions-focused approach, Justin combines technical expertise with a strong emphasis on building long-term relationships. He is particularly valued by clients for his ability to provide clear, steady guidance, especially during periods of change or uncertainty.
“Business owners need to be focused on sales, growth and margins. That’s where their energy should be. Within Business Services, our role is to make sure everything behind the scenes supports that, so they don’t run into problems later on.
We focus on putting the right structure around the numbers so clients have clear, reliable information to work from. Once that clarity is there, it becomes much easier to make decisions and plan ahead.”
“Over the years, I’ve seen a lot, from economic downturns to more recent changes in tariffs, customs and different industry shifts. Most situations can be worked through. The solution isn’t always straightforward, but there is usually a way forward if you deal with things early.
During more challenging periods, it’s about helping clients understand what needs to change, whether that’s reducing costs, restructuring or taking a different approach. It’s not always easy, but working through it together leads to better outcomes.”
“When a client comes on board, it’s about taking the time to understand how they operate and putting the right foundations in place from the beginning.
That often means working closely with them early on, establishing clear processes and explaining how everything fits together. Once that’s in place, the relationship develops naturally. Many of our clients have been with us for years, and I firmly believe that comes down to trust and our hands-on approach.”
“It’s very satisfying to see a business grow from the early days to the point where it becomes established and self-sufficient, or where they bring their finance function in-house.
Sometimes, it’s about stepping in at the right moment and taking pressure off. If you can give a client clarity and support when they need it most, that’s where you make a real difference.”
“The strength of the wider group means there is always someone with the expertise a client needs. Having worked in a smaller firm environment, I see real value in being able to tap into that broader pool of experts.
For me, it’s about continuing to adapt, whether that’s through technology or adopting new ways of working. I’ve always taken that approach and that will follow me as we continue to grow.”
