Why Family Business Succession Fails (and how to fix it)

Business Advisory Assistant Manager
Limited companies. Owner-managed businesses. Industrial & manufacturing. Health & Social Care. Construction & Property.
Year-end accounts. Management accounts. VAT reviews. Systems support.
“I want to give clients clarity in their numbers and confidence in our service”.
Olivia Meldrum is a Business Advisory Assistant Manager, based in our Glasgow office. She supports a range of businesses with their accounting and compliance needs, from preparing year-end accounts and management accounts to reviewing VAT and working directly on client sites to strengthen systems and processes. It’s the variety of everyday being different that keeps things interesting for her. Supporting clients across such a range of things means that she’s able to gain a good understanding of businesses as a whole that is transferable to all clients and a better understanding of their individual businesses as well that helps her learn how they operate and ensure she’s adding value in the suggestions or advice she’s giving.
By taking a hands-on and practical approach, she helps clients stay on top of their finances while building confidence in their numbers.
“While some of my clients might have an accounting background, it’s not something I can say for all of them. That’s something I’m mindful of each time I start building a relationship with a client. I focus on explaining things clearly and adapting my approach to suit the person in front of me. Inserting technical jargon into every conversation won’t be beneficial to them. Building strong relationships starts with making sure clients feel comfortable asking questions and confident in the answers they receive.
One of the biggest challenges in my role is balancing statutory deadlines with client expectations. Busy periods can put pressure on priorities, and it’s important to manage workloads carefully while still delivering the same high level of service every client expects. With proactive planning and clear communication, I ensure clients know when to expect deliverables from me, and I know that I’m on track with what I need to deliver.”
“I’ve always been more of a numbers person. I enjoyed maths at school and knew I wanted a career that played to that strength. University wasn’t the route for me. I was keen to get stuck in straight away, so I chose an apprenticeship and learned on the job. That practical experience shaped how I work today.
There’s a common misconception that being an accountant is just about being good at maths. Numbers matter, of course. But the real value comes from understanding what those numbers and any changes mean for a business. Our role goes far beyond figures on a page. It’s about helping shape businesses and supporting them to get where they want to be.”
“The most satisfying part of my role is when a client comes to me with an idea or a change they want to make, but they’re unsure how to make it happen.
Working through it together, step by step, and seeing them happy with the end result is incredibly rewarding. I want to be someone they can rely on. Someone who helps get things done properly, so they can concentrate on growing and running their business.”
Being that steady support is what drives me. When clients trust you enough to come back with new ideas or challenges, that’s when you know the relationship is working.”
“I’d say my biggest strength is being approachable and friendly. I want both clients and colleagues to feel they can come to me for support. Whether it’s answering a quick question or working through something more complex, I’m always happy to help.
I’m proud to be part of a team that works hard for its clients and supports each other along the way. That shared commitment makes a real difference to the service we provide and the relationships we build.”
