“Supporting people & bringing clarity to the audit process”

As an Audit Assistant Manager based in Glasgow, Robbie Boyle plays a central role in delivering high-quality audits while supporting both clients and colleagues at every stage of the journey. No two weeks are the same, but his focus remains consistent: planning and leading audit engagements, reviewing team output, preparing financial statements and guiding clients smoothly through their year-end process.

With experience spanning sectors from manufacturing and transport to renewable energy, sport and charities, he brings a broad commercial perspective and a calm, organised approach. Robbie is known for building trust quickly, communicating clearly and creating an environment where both clients and team members feel confident and supported.

Relationships first

“For me, building strong relationships starts with listening. Before diving into the numbers, I make a point of understanding who my clients are, how their business operates and what matters most to them. That foundation of trust makes technical conversations far more effective.

Some of the strongest client relationships I’ve built have grown from being consistently proactive and approachable, particularly during periods of tight deadlines or complex challenges. By working alongside clients rather than at a distance, the relationship develops naturally. The real turning point is when they feel comfortable calling me directly to talk through an issue.

The most satisfying part of working with clients is knowing I’ve made the process easier for them. When they genuinely appreciate the support and feel that value has been added beyond simply completing the audit, that’s when I know we’ve done things properly. The greatest compliment I’ve received from clients is that they trust me and that they enjoy working with me. For me, that says everything and how I always aim for it to be.”

Support from start to finish

“One of the advantages of my experience is having taken many engagements from planning through to completion, often preparing the financial statements as well. Being involved at every stage gives me a strong understanding of the pressures clients face during the year-end process. Each sector and business brings its own nuances, and I enjoy adapting my approach to reflect that.

My aim is always to build trust quickly and become someone clients can rely on. Whether it’s answering a technical query or helping them navigate a new accounting requirement, I want them to feel they can pick up the phone to ask me anything.”

Solving complex challenges

“A recent example that stands out involved supporting a client with the implementation of the revised FRS 102 lease requirements. They had an unusual lease agreement that didn’t clearly align with the standard guidance, which created uncertainty around how the new rules should apply.

I reviewed the agreement in detail, consulted internally on the technical interpretation and worked through the practical implications for their financial statements. By clarifying the treatment and helping document the key judgements, we enabled the client to implement the revised policy confidently and transparently.

It’s a good illustration of what audit should be – not just identifying issues, but helping clients navigate them with clarity.”

Calm under pressure

“A lesson I’ve learned in my career is the importance of staying calm when timelines tighten or unexpected issues arise. Early on, I sometimes felt pressure to have every answer immediately. Experience has shown me that taking a step back, organising the facts and involving the right people leads to far better outcomes.

That mindset shapes how I lead relationships today. I try to create a steady, supportive environment where the team feels able to ask questions and work collaboratively towards solutions. Audit can be demanding, but it doesn’t have to feel chaotic.”

More than numbers

“A common misconception about audit is that it’s purely about checking figures. In reality, it’s very much a people-centred profession. Understanding the individuals behind the business, guiding them through challenges and helping them feel confident in their reporting is just as important as the technical accuracy.

Balancing that with clear communication is one of the biggest challenges in our field. I approach it by planning ahead, breaking down complex topics into manageable conversations and keeping clients informed at every stage.”

A varied & hands-on approach

“My role centres around leading engagements from initial planning right through to final sign-off. That means understanding the client’s business, assessing risk, coordinating the team’s work and ensuring everything is delivered to a high standard and on time.

I’m in regular contact with clients to discuss any issues and keep the audit progressing smoothly. Good communication is often what makes the difference between a stressful process and a structured, well-managed one.

I’m heavily involved in reviewing work, preparing financial statements and being a key point of contact for clients throughout the audit. Just as importantly, I spend time supporting and developing junior members of the team. Whether that’s coaching on the job, talking through technical areas in detail or simply helping someone build confidence, developing others is a big part of what motivates me.”

My journey to audit

“I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving and understanding how businesses operate behind the scenes. Audit felt like a natural fit because it combines technical challenge with the opportunity to work closely with a wide range of organisations and people.

Over time, what has reinforced that decision is seeing the impact that clear communication and steady support can have. When clients feel reassured and teams feel confident, the technical work becomes far more effective. That people-focused element is what makes the role genuinely rewarding.”

Growing with the team

“Being part of AAB is rewarding because of the genuinely collaborative culture. Supporting colleagues and seeing them develop is something I take pride in, and it’s encouraging to work in an environment where that mindset is shared across the firm.

Looking ahead, I’m keen to continue developing my skills in data-driven auditing and digital tools that improve efficiency for both clients and our audit teams. I’m equally focused on strengthening my leadership and coaching capabilities as I take on more responsibility.”
