"PROVIDING CLARITY IN AN EVER-CHANGING TAX LANDSCAPE."

Sonia Ramzan is a Private Client Tax Assistant Manager based in our Edinburgh office – helping individuals and families navigate their personal tax affairs. Her work spans everything from personal tax planning and compliance to tax returns and estate matters.

Sonia enjoys getting to the heart of complex tax issues and understanding how they affect each client’s wider goals and priorities. By combining technical knowledge with a personal approach, she helps identify practical solutions that give clients confidence in their tax affairs.

MAKING A MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE TO CLIENTS

“Over the years, I’ve developed a real interest in private client tax, particularly because there is an opportunity to tackle technical issues and make a meaningful difference to clients. I began my career working within a compliance portfolio, but as I gained experience, I became increasingly drawn to the advisory side of the role. Working on complex tax returns, responding to client queries, and dealing with HMRC enquiries and disclosures gave me the opportunity to explore more challenging issues and understand the wider impact of tax advice.

I enjoy the combination of problem-solving and continuous learning that comes with working in private client tax. Completing my CTA qualification was an important milestone, and it strengthened my ambition to build on my technical experience, gain broader exposure to advisory work and continue developing professionally. I’m motivated by the opportunity to keep learning while helping clients navigate their tax affairs with confidence.”

TAKING TIME TO UNDERSTAND THE NEEDS OF THE CLIENT

“My experience in private client tax has given me a strong understanding of the challenges individuals and trustees can face in an ever-changing tax landscape. It has also taught me the importance of looking beyond the technical details and taking the time to understand each client’s personal circumstances, priorities, and wider goals.

I’m a firm believer in getting the tax compliance right, but I also recognise the value of understanding the bigger picture. By explaining complex tax matters in a clear and accessible way, I help clients understand their options, the implications of different decisions and how these may affect their longer-term plans. For me, good tax advice is about combining technical accuracy with a practical, personal approach that helps clients make informed decisions.”

BRINGING CLARITY TO TAX

“I worked with a client who had outstanding tax matters spanning several years and had been let down by her previous advisers. Understandably, she was feeling uncertain about the process, so it was important to take the time to understand her circumstances, listen to her concerns, and provide reassurance at every stage.

By being approachable, communicating clearly and keeping her informed as we worked through each outstanding matter, I helped bring greater clarity to what had initially felt overwhelming. Taking ownership and following through on the work helped rebuild her confidence and trust in the process.

The experience reinforced how important reliability, clear communication and a genuine understanding of each client’s circumstances are when building strong relationships. Sometimes, making a real difference is as much about how you support someone as it is about the technical work itself.”

KEEPING PACE WITH TAX CHANGES

“One of the biggest challenges in private client tax is keeping pace with frequent legislative changes and understanding how they apply to each client’s individual circumstances. No two clients are the same, so it’s important to look beyond the changes themselves and consider what they mean in practice – ensuring the advice we provide is both relevant and appropriate.

I approach this by staying up to date with developments, researching the technical position thoroughly and taking the time to understand the wider context of each client’s affairs. I also value working closely with colleagues and drawing on their expertise where a different perspective or additional insight would be helpful. Ultimately, it’s about combining strong technical knowledge with a collaborative, considered approach.”

TAX IS ABOUT MORE THAN CRUNCHING NUMBERS

“I think one of the biggest misconceptions about tax is that it’s mainly about crunching the numbers and completing tax returns. While getting the compliance right is an important part of what we do, private client tax involves so much more than that.

It’s about taking the time to understand each client’s individual circumstances, interpreting complex legislation and identifying opportunities for tax-efficient planning. It also means looking at the bigger picture and considering how decisions around assets, wealth and estates could affect clients and their families, both now and in the future.

For me, the most rewarding part is being able to combine the technical side of tax with a genuine understanding of what matters to each client, helping them make informed decisions that support their wider goals.”

USING AI TO KEEP THE FOCUS ON THE CLIENT

“I’m particularly interested in how AI and emerging technologies can be used to improve the way we work, streamline processes and make us more efficient. I think there is real potential for technology to reduce time spent on routine tasks, allowing us to focus more on providing valuable, tailored advice and building strong relationships with clients.”
