"SOLVING COMPLEX TAX PROBLEMS AND DELIVERING REAL VALUE FOR CLIENTS."

As a Private Client Tax Assistant Manager based in Edinburgh, Lee Ferguson works with a diverse portfolio of private clients, supporting them through an increasingly complex tax landscape. Lee’s role combines technical compliance work with bespoke tax planning and advisory support, ensuring his clients have clarity, confidence and peace of mind when it comes to their tax affairs.

A typical week for Lee involves reviewing and finalising self-assessment and capital gains tax returns, liaising with HMRC, supporting clients with a range of tax queries and working alongside senior colleagues on more complex advisory projects. No two client situations are ever the same, which is one of the aspects of tax he enjoys most.

MAKING TAX CLEAR AND PRACTICAL

“My interest in tax began while studying Accountancy and Finance at university, where I developed a particular interest in the subject and chose the self-assessment system as the focus of my dissertation. From there, a career in private client tax felt like a natural fit, allowing me to combine technical expertise with client-facing work and relationship building.

Over the years, managing a varied portfolio of clients has taught me the importance of trust, communication and delivering advice that clients can genuinely understand and act upon. I believe one of the most valuable skills a tax adviser can have is the ability to explain complex legislation in a clear, practical way without overwhelming people with technical jargon.

My CTA qualification further strengthened my technical expertise, allowing me to apply learning directly to real client situations while gaining valuable experience managing complex tax matters.”

BUILDING TRUSTED RELATIONSHIPS

“For me, every successful client relationship starts with understanding the individual behind the tax return. I take the time to learn about each client’s circumstances, goals and concerns so that I can provide advice tailored to their unique situation. Being responsive, proactive and approachable helps create the trust that’s essential to long-term relationships.

One example that stands out involved drawing on my knowledge of the client’s affairs and maintaining open communication, I was able to rebuild rapport and restore confidence in the service being provided. Experiences like this reinforce the value of consistency, trust and understanding when supporting clients.”

A COMMITMENT TO CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

“One of the biggest challenges of my career was completing my CTA qualification while working full-time and managing a client portfolio. Balancing study commitments with client deadlines required careful planning, prioritisation and resilience. While there were setbacks along the way, the experience taught me the importance of discipline, organisation and effective communication. Those lessons continue to shape how I manage my workload and support clients today.

Tax legislation is constantly evolving, and staying up to date is one of the biggest challenges in the profession. I make it a priority to keep up with Finance Act changes, HMRC guidance and industry developments so that clients benefit from the most relevant and informed advice possible.”

DELIVERING MEANINGFUL OUTCOMES

“The most rewarding aspect of my role is helping clients achieve positive outcomes through effective planning and advice. Recently, I worked with a client who had relocated overseas and was considering transferring ownership of their business to the next generation while securing funds for retirement. By exploring the available options and clearly outlining the tax implications, we were able to help them make informed decisions with confidence.

Equally rewarding is helping individuals through difficult personal circumstances. One of the greatest compliments I have received came from a client who I supported following the death of their spouse. By coordinating with solicitors and other advisers, I helped minimise the administrative burden on the client during a challenging time, allowing them to focus on what mattered most.”

LOOKING AHEAD

“Private client tax is far more than compliance and box-ticking. It requires judgement, interpretation and tailored advice because no two clients have the same circumstances. As the profession continues to evolve, I am particularly interested in the opportunities that artificial intelligence and emerging technologies present to improve efficiency, enhance client service and support better decision-making.”

WORKING TOGETHER FOR CLIENT SUCCESS

“One of the most exciting aspects of working at AAB is the opportunity to work alongside highly experienced specialists across a range of disciplines. The depth of expertise across the business creates opportunities to deliver truly holistic advice, while the firm’s growth ambitions make it an exciting place to develop professionally and help clients access the best possible support.”
