"THE DETAILS MATTER. THE BIG PICTURE MATTERS MORE."

Gavin Brown is a Private Client Tax Senior Manager based in Glasgow, helping individuals and families navigate a range of complex tax matters. He particularly enjoys building relationships with new clients and providing clear, practical advice on Inheritance Tax, UK trusts, Capital Gains Tax and residency issues.

Alongside his client work, Gavin plays an important role in supporting the development of the team. He mentors junior colleagues, reviews their advisory work, and helps them identify the right support for their clients’ needs.

GIVING CLIENTS GREATER CLARITY, CONFIDENCE AND PEACE OF MIND

“I really enjoy meeting new clients, getting to know them and understanding what matters most to them. Everyone has different priorities and ambitions, and I find it rewarding to help people navigate their tax affairs, explore their options, and put the right plans in place to achieve their goals.

For me, it’s more than providing technical advice. It’s about building relationships, understanding the bigger picture, and finding practical solutions that make a genuine difference to people’s lives. Knowing that my advice can give clients greater clarity, confidence, and peace of mind is one of the most satisfying parts of my role.”

A GENUINE COMMITMENT TO CLIENTS

“Having started my career as a junior member and progressing through the ranks to a senior leadership role, I’ve learned a great deal about what it takes to build trust and establish yourself professionally. One of the challenges along the way was moving beyond the perception of being a junior member of staff and demonstrating that I had the technical knowledge, experience and confidence to take on greater responsibility.

I believe the best way to do that is through consistency, a willingness to learn, and a genuine commitment to supporting clients and staff. I’ve always been keen to share my knowledge, help colleagues when they need it and contribute wherever I can. It is also important to listen to those around you, whose knowledge is also invaluable. That experience has shaped the way I work today and is something I now value when mentoring and supporting more junior members of the team.”

HONEST COMMUNICATION IS AT THE HEART OF EVERY SUCCESSFUL CLIENT RELATIONSHIP

“I believe open and honest communication is at the heart of every successful client relationship. I make a point of being proactive, keeping clients updated and making myself available to answer questions or talk through any concerns they may have. It’s important that clients know where they stand and feel comfortable getting in touch whenever they need support.

I also take time to understand what each client wants to achieve, their priorities, and what matters most to them. By setting clear expectations from the outset and maintaining regular communication, I can work alongside clients to find practical solutions that meet their needs and help them achieve their goals.”

A WELCOMING AND SUPPORTIVE TEAM

“One of the things I’ve always valued about the team is how welcoming and supportive everyone is. We have a wealth of experience and knowledge across the department, which means there’s always someone to learn from, share ideas with or turn to for advice. At the same time, we’re small enough to work closely together, build strong relationships, and genuinely understand one another’s roles.

I think that balance is really important. It creates an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their experience, and working together to find the best solutions for clients. I’ve benefited hugely from the knowledge and support of those around me throughout my career, and I enjoy being able to pass that on to others as well.”

KEEPING UP WITH CHANGING TAX RULES

“One of the biggest challenges facing Private Client specialists is keeping pace with an ever-changing tax landscape. Tax legislation and regulations are constantly evolving, meaning we need to stay informed and understand how changes could affect our clients and the advice we provide.

Another key challenge is making sure tax-efficient planning works in the context of each client’s circumstances. Every individual and family has different priorities, relationships and long-term ambitions, so there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution.”

PROVIDING CONSIDERED, PRACTICAL TAX ADVICE

“I think one of the biggest misconceptions about private client tax is that it’s just about crunching the numbers. In reality, good tax planning is about having a thorough understanding of the client, their circumstances, and what they want to achieve.

From there, our role is to understand the complexities of the legislation, regulations, and relevant case law and work with the client to help them navigate the tax system.

Ultimately, it’s not about taking unnecessary risks. It’s about providing considered, practical advice that helps clients achieve their objectives while understanding their responsibilities and the options available to them.”
