Why Family Business Succession Fails (and how to fix it)
AAB / About / Our Team / Aidan McGrath
Director
Small and mid-sized businesses. Family-owned companies. Growing enterprises.
Audit and technical oversight. Quality management. Team leadership and development. Resource management and delivery planning.
“Standards matter. If we get the fundamentals right, everything else follows.”
Based in our Dublin office, Aidan balances client delivery with team leadership and operational oversight. He works primarily with small and mid-sized businesses, including family-owned companies and ambitious scale-ups.
Alongside his client work, he plays an active role in coaching and developing the team, managing resources effectively and keeping projects on track. He maintains oversight of delivery across the portfolio, ensuring work is consistently high quality and aligned with clients’ expectations. In doing so, he helps translate the firm’s wider priorities into practical, day-to-day action, maintaining high standards while enabling teams to perform at their best.
“I have always been motivated by solving problems and bringing structure to complex challenges. I enjoy working through technical issues and helping clients reach informed decisions.
Equally, I value building capable teams. A strong team culture naturally improves the quality of work and strengthens client relationships. I want the team to enjoy what they are doing and feel part of our wider strategy. I am closely involved in reviewing work, guiding less experienced colleagues and creating clear development pathways.
For me, consistency in standards starts internally, with training, open dialogue and shared accountability. Creating that environment is something I take seriously.”
“From the outset of any new client relationship, being up-front and open is a non-negotiable for me. If you are organised, direct and transparent from day one, it establishes confidence immediately. Clients need to understand what we are doing, why we are doing it and what they can expect.
The most satisfying aspect of working with clients is not simply finishing a successful audit or finalising a report. It is when a client recognises the assurance and structure we bring to their business. It might not be ‘up in lights’, but when a business is structured, financially sound, and compliant, that’s when things are going well.
The greatest compliment I have received was being told, ‘You have been more than an accountant. You have been someone I can rely on completely.’ That meant a lot as I do try and go above and beyond.”
“One of the most important lessons I have learned is the value of remaining calm under pressure. Busy periods are inevitable. What defines us is the ability to prioritise effectively and communicate clearly.
When you stay calm and structured, you provide stability for the team, too.
I focus heavily on forward planning and clear delegation. If workloads are managed properly and expectations are understood, pressure becomes manageable and a lot less stressful.”
“The greatest challenge in my area is balancing increasing regulatory complexity with rising client expectations and team capacity. The solution lies in planning early, maintaining open communication and empowering the team to drive projects forward. Quality can never be compromised. It takes time to deliver great results but it’s worth it when you see a client grow, take on new team members, and ultimately, maybe sell the business on.
A common misconception is that accountants just ‘do the numbers. In reality, accounting is far more than producing figures. We’re problem-solvers, advisers, and risk managers. A good accountant doesn’t just report what happened in the past— we help shape what happens next.”
“I’m building my skills in data analytics, automation, and AI so I can give clients clearer insights, quicker answers, and a smoother overall experience. My goal is to make our work more efficient, improve the quality of what we deliver, and create more value in every client relationship.
That’s exciting for me as we grow with AAB, as it means more resources, greater innovation, and a bigger team that shares knowledge.”
