Graeme Robertson is Director in our Audit team, within the John F Daly business. He specialises in Joint Venture and Contract Audit, primarily for companies in the Exploration and Production space but also for other large energy companies.  

Working from our Aberdeen office, Graeme has conducted audits both in the UK and overseas, leading projects which have resulted in significant cost savings and returns for his clients. He’s a self-confessed people person who loves nothing better than building networks and doing his bit to grow our business.

If you set out the ground rules that way from day one, it helps all parties. I treat every audit as a project – right from the planning stage, through the reporting and closing. I never go into audits thinking this will be just the same as the last one, or the same as the next one. And that’s what makes my job so enjoyable.

Auditors are not here to trip you up and catch you out. I like to see us as business partners who can add value to what our clients do. We’re here to look at how things can be done better, done differently. In some respects, it’s like offering free independent consultancy as well as delivering the audit deliverables.”  

CHANGING & CHALLENGING

I like to question and challenge, and I’m a firm believer that just because something’s been done that way before, doesn’t mean it’s the way it should always be done. I’m always looking for opportunities to improve, add value, make a difference. And I think the steady-state can work, change is important too.”

“I think honesty is one of my greatest strengths. I’m quite happy to put my head above the parapet. To challenge or say no. I think people respect that I’ll always bring that straight-talking view. I’ve been working in the energy industry for over 20 years, so I know how it works and keep abreast of the ever-changing landscape. I know a lot of people and that’s invaluable in helping me build my networks. I can bring a lot of business into the firm because of that.” 

THE GREATEST COMPLIMENT 

“If there’s a job to do, I just want to get on and do it. That’s my mantra. Get on with it and finish it. It’s human nature to like good feedback but constructive criticism works for me too. I can take it on the chin, learn from it, move on and be better. But for me, the greatest compliment I could ever receive is when clients come back with more work. When they’re happy to keep working with me and engage year in, year out. It doesn’t get better than that.”
