“I’M GOOD AT SPINNING PLATES.”

Tom Gee is a Senior Manager within our Global Employment Taxes team. He’s based in our London office, but you’ll often find him working remotely from his home in Birmingham.

Tom works with companies that are either looking to move their people overseas or bring them to work in the UK. And that can be any type of business, working across any sector. Whether it’s a large organisation with a very established global mobility programme, or a business relocating their team for the first time, Tom will help them navigate all the implications of doing that.

BUILDING A PARTNERSHIP

“When I work with clients, I want them to see me as a trusted advisor. A partner who they can pass stuff onto. Someone they can turn to whenever they need help, or the answer to a question – even if it’s not my normal area of work. I know I’m here to provide a service, but I also want to get to know my clients, whether that’s on a personal level or getting to know their business. I think that’s really important.”

SEEING THE FULL PICTURE

“I’ve worked places where you do one small job for a company, but you have no idea what else is going on with them. At AAB, that doesn’t happen. Everything feels more connected – maybe because we’re a little bit smaller, a little more personal than some firms. That allows me to get a greater understanding of my clients and what’s happening in their world. And means I can see through a project from beginning to end. Something that makes a huge difference.

That does also mean that I’m kept quite busy. But that’s what I like. I’m hardworking and get a buzz from being able to keep all the plates spinning at once. And if any of my team need helping out, I’m always happy to muck in to get the job done. A client once said that they’d ‘hire me in a heartbeat’ and that’s the greatest compliment I could ever receive.”

INNOVATION IN ACTION

“I like to think I’m quite an innovative person, maybe even a bit entrepreneurial – and that works at AAB. I have the freedom to be inventive, to try something different, or seek out new technologies. And we’re constantly pushing forward and trying out things that maybe the ‘Big 4’ accountancy firms would like to do. But it’s easier for us, as we’re more nimble. We can change things quickly if we have to. I guess that’s probably one of the best things about working here.”

IMAGINING THE FUTURE

“Most of my job involves moving people around the world. But employers are increasingly looking at the impact global mobility has on their ESG plan. So part of my role is to give advice on how we can make that more sustainable.

I’m also really excited about the technology journey that we’re going on as a business – and feel lucky that I can play my part in that. We’re developing new products to make life easier for our clients and working hard to make our internal processes as slick as possible. And to see that taking shape is really exciting.”
