“I’M ALWAYS STRIVING TO GET THE BEST FROM MYSELF.”

Michael is a Manager in our Corporate Tax team and is also a member of our specialist R&D tax team.

Based in our Aberdeen office, Michael works with clients across a number of sectors to ensure ensuring companies meet all corporate tax compliance requirements and also provides advisory support on specialist tax projects.

As part of the specialist R&D team, Michael works with clients that are developing innovative new ideas for products and services to make claims for R&D tax relief from HMRC.

R&D ACROSS THE SECTORS

“The most satisfying part of working with clients is being given having the opportunity to meet and have discussions with diverse groups of people with a variety of skills and experience who are passionate and motivated about what they do.

This is especially relevant Particularly, for the clients that I work with on R&D tax relief claims, all of these clients are designing developing new ideas products and services that I enjoy learning about. The great thing about R&D tax relief is that it is available to pretty much any type of company regardless of industry sector.

It is extremely satisfying being able to help clients investing in R&D to push their business on by assisting them to successfully make making a claim for R&D tax relief which helps to strengthen the companies cashflow that which can be the difference between investing further in projects or abandoning their work.”

A PERSONAL APPROACH

“A good client relationship should be one that has trust on both sides. From my client’s perspective, they should be able to trust me to advise their company with the most up to date information, ensuring they are maximising their business performance.

They should also feel comfortable discussing their plans and goals for the business with us so we can be ahead of the game and offer the relevant advice at the relevant right time to ensure they manage to achieve these goals.

Clients obviously appreciate upfront, realistic and knowledgeable advice and I think that this type of trust in our advice is developed by taking a personal approach and really getting to know your each client as more than just someone on a list, something I think that AAB really encourages whether that be spending time with a client virtually or face-to-face.”

TEAM COLLABORATION

“I think that I take an honest, empathetic, and practical approach to my work, my team and my clients. I build good relationships with my clients and colleagues, and I will always make myself available to have a catch up and will always do my best to help with any issues or queries they are experiencing.

One of the best things about AAB is the amount of talented people with a wide variety of experience that we all have access to. I learn something new every day from both a technical and a personal aspect perspective that I can develop further in my career.

One of the biggest and most awarding parts to of my role is the coaching and development of trainees and newcomers to the firm. It is a really proud moment watching someone you have trained develop grow in confidence and technical ability. It is amazing to see how resilient and driven people can be as they push on to get the promotions and recognition that they deserve.

I work in a team that continues to grow with an expanding pool of talented and experienced individuals that I learn from all the time. This encourages me to keep challenging myself to develop my own skills and experience as a well-rounded tax advisor.”
