“Tidying up the numbers brings everything into focus”

Stephanie Lalley is an Assistant Manager based in our Glasgow office who supports a wide range of clients, from sole traders to growing limited companies. Her role is varied and client-focused, covering statutory accounts, management reporting, VAT returns and advising on day-to-day business challenges.

With an eye for detail and a genuine passion for solving problems for the people at the heart of them, Stephanie thrives on turning messy financial data into clear, accurate reports. She enjoys the variety in her work and takes pride in helping clients gain clarity and confidence in their numbers so they can focus on running and growing their businesses.

Building trust through communication

“For me, communication is at the heart of a good client relationship. I always take time to introduce myself properly to new clients, get to know them and their business, and make sure they feel comfortable reaching out. I never want to be just a name at the bottom of an email. I want clients to feel they know me, that I’m approachable, and that I’m here to help. That’s the foundation for a great working relationship.

One particular client comes to mind who had concerns about dealing with too many contacts. I took the time to meet them face-to-face more often, made sure I was their main point of contact, and reassured them I was fully on board. That change made a huge difference, and now we have a strong relationship, and I have a much better understanding of how best to support their needs, because everyone is different and it’s about tailoring your approach.”

All about the numbers & the people behind them

“Every week in my role looks a little different, and that’s what I enjoy most. I work with clients of all sizes across sectors like construction, hospitality, pharmaceuticals and more.

One day I might be preparing statutory accounts, the next it’s management reports or helping clients navigate VAT. I also spend a lot of time responding to client queries and offering guidance on the financial side of their business. The variety keeps things fresh, and each new challenge is an opportunity to learn and add value.”

Helping businesses grow & thrive

“My approach is simple: help clients understand their numbers so they can grow and thrive. It’s about helping them achieve their goals. Whether it’s preparing accurate reports, answering questions, or guiding them through changes, I’m here to support them every step of the way. The best part is seeing the difference it makes.”

Looking at the small print

“I’ve always enjoyed the investigative side of accounting. There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking raw data and turning it into something accurate and meaningful. It’s a bit like solving a puzzle – you look at all the pieces, spot inconsistencies, tidy things up, and then everything clicks into place. That moment when the accounts balance, and everything makes sense, that’s a great feeling. It’s not just about getting the numbers right, it’s about giving clients clarity and peace of mind.”

Problem-solving experts

“What I enjoy most is helping clients solve problems. Sometimes it’s a technical challenge like getting their accounting software to work the way they need it to. Other times it’s something that’s just been causing them unnecessary stress.

One client recently thanked me for helping them get to grips with Xero. I made time to walk them through it, step by step, and reassured them that there’s no such thing as a silly question. They told me I made something complicated feel simple, and that was a great compliment.”

Embracing change, together

“Accounting is always evolving. From new legislation, new technology, new ways of working. It can be daunting, both for us as accountants and for our clients. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is adapting to the shift towards digital processes like Making Tax Digital and learning platforms like Xero and QuickBooks. It’s a lot to take in, and I know it can feel overwhelming for clients too. That’s why I make it a priority to stay informed and help clients feel supported through these changes. I want them to know that whatever comes next, they’re not on their own.”

Not just number crunchers

“There’s a common misconception that accountants are all about spreadsheets and not much else. But in reality, we’re problem-solvers and advisors. Yes, we’re good with calculators, but we also care about the people behind the numbers.

For me, the job is about helping business owners understand their finances so they can make better decisions and move forward with confidence. If I can demystify a complex issue and give someone clarity, then I’ve done my job right.”

Learning never stops

“I’m a naturally curious person, so I’m always asking questions and looking to expand my knowledge. I’ve gained a solid technical foundation through my professional qualifications, but I know there’s always more to learn, especially from the experienced colleagues around me.

At AAB, there’s a real team spirit, and within the Business Advisory team that’s no different. We share knowledge, celebrate each other’s successes, and support one another through challenges. That environment really helps me grow and ultimately, it means I can offer even better support to our clients.”
