Rachel Leslie is a Global Employment Tax Assistant Manager in our Edinburgh office. She supports a portfolio of clients by assisting and advising them on their employment tax obligations both in the UK and overseas.

The varied nature of her role is something that Rachel loves. One day she might be assisting clients with the tax implications of sending an employee overseas while another she might be providing advice regarding the tax implications of employees based in the UK. No matter where she’s supporting clients, Rachel prides herself on taking the time to get to know her clients and their needs so she can provide a bespoke and tailored service that’s individual to what they need.

Trust is the most important foundation

“Clients are at the core of everything we do here at AAB. I believe that for a lot of our clients, they see us as an extension of their business and a key point of contact for all tax advice and support. The only way we can create those all-important relationships with clients is to build trust. Clients need to trust that we are the best people, with the right knowledge and experience to help them comply with their employment tax obligations. For me, that means giving them the relevant information they need to make decisions that are based on fact. I’m in regular contact with my clients, reassuring them that I am here for any queries they may have.

By having open conversations, we are able to establish any areas of concern and advise them of any improvements that can be made. The main goal is to ensure our clients are working efficiently from a tax perspective and when our advice is taken onboard, this could result in financial savings. Knowing that we are exceeding client expectations and helping our clients’ businesses to thrive is a feeling like no other.”

“The rise in technology over the years has allowed for more robust client relationships to be built. There’s rarely a week where I am not on a video call. This might be discussing a particular job or having a more general catch-up with the client. Client contact is the key to success and technology has given us an easy way to ensure we have regular face to face interactions with clients.

Working within Global Employment Tax means that we work with clients on a worldwide scale. The use of technology has helped us deliver our services to more clients across the globe while maintain that a hands-on approach. We are able to build strong relationships irrespective of the distances between us and those clients.”

“Working in tax is considered to be boring however this couldn’t be further from the truth. Each day is different and brings a new challenge. There is always something new to learn which allows me to improve on my technical knowledge. Employment tax is an ever-growing and complex area built on both legislation and case law. So, we must stay up to date with any changes to the law and any updates that are made to the guidance.”
