“Collaboration is key to what I do.”

Mark Robinson is an Audit Manager based in our Aberdeen office. He oversees day-to-day progress in the audit team , and ensures that engagements are carried out efficiently and effectively. His role involves being the first line of review for audit work, setting schedules, and maintaining high standards throughout.

While his experience spans multiple industries, his primary specialism lies in the oil and gas services sector, where he works closely with businesses to navigate the complexities of financial compliance and reporting.

Building Trusting Client Relationships

“For me, trust is the foundation of a successful client relationship. Clients need to feel confident that our audit approach is not only focused on compliance, although that is a crucial part, but also about adding value for them. When trust is established, engagements run smoother, and we can work together to support client growth. Everyone at AAB aims to go above and beyond to provide proactive, tailored support—ensuring our clients always feel that we’re on their side.

One of the most meaningful moments in my career was receiving a personal phone call from a client at the end of an audit engagement. They expressed their disappointment that I wouldn’t be part of their team the following year, thanked me for my work, and wished me well. It was a reminder that the relationships we build go beyond just the audit process—it’s about trust, respect, and genuine connections.”

The Balance Between Tech & Personal Service

“The rise of cloud-based accounting and virtual audits has changed the landscape, and COVID proved that remote audits can be both effective and efficient. That said, I believe a balanced approach is best. While technology enhances efficiency, there is no substitute for in-person collaboration when it comes to complex issues and relationship-building. A hybrid model allows us to optimise time while maintaining the hands-on service that our clients value and deserve.”

Driving Change & Innovation

“AAB has a reputation for being disruptive, and I embrace this in my approach to work. Many of our clients have switched to us after years with the same auditors, and they appreciate our fresh perspectives. I look for efficiencies in how we approach audits, ensuring we deliver the highest quality service with minimal disruption to the client.

Taking time at the outset to truly understand a business’s unique challenges means we can work smarter, not harder, and ultimately create better outcomes.”

Overcoming Challenges in Audit

“Audit is constantly evolving, and staying ahead of the curve is essential. Some of the biggest challenges we face include keeping up with regulatory changes, leveraging data analytics and automation, addressing cybersecurity risks, and understanding and integrating emerging AI technologies.

We tackle these challenges through continuous training and innovation, ensuring we remain at the forefront of industry developments.”

The Rewarding Side of My Work

“One of the most satisfying aspects of my role is getting to know clients and understanding what makes their businesses tick. Seeing their passion and commitment first-hand allows me to tailor my approach to best suit their needs.

I also find great satisfaction in mentoring and developing junior colleagues. Watching someone grow in confidence and skill—from their first day to becoming a leader in their own right—is incredibly rewarding. The strong team bonds we build create an environment where we can all rely on each other to succeed.”

My Greatest Strengths

“If I had to pinpoint my greatest strengths, I’d say relationship-building and a willingness to help others. Whether it’s working with clients, leading audit teams, or mentoring junior colleagues, I thrive on clear communication, organisation, and creating strong connections. My background—ranging from hospitality to captaining a hockey team—has reinforced the importance of adaptability, leadership, and people skills in every professional setting.”

Breaking the ‘Boring Accountant’ Myth

“If there’s one misconception about our profession that bothers me, it’s the outdated stereotype that auditors and accountants are boring. The reality is quite the opposite. The diversity of personalities, backgrounds, and experiences in this industry makes for an engaging and dynamic industry to work in. There’s never a dull moment, and every day brings new challenges and opportunities.

I’m proud to be part of a team that break the mould by bringing fresh energy, innovative thinking, and a client-focused approach to everything we do. And that’s what makes this job so rewarding.”

Looking Ahead

“The future is exciting—both for me and for the company. AAB’s ongoing expansion brings new opportunities, new locations, and an ever-growing client base. Personally, I’m eager to take on new challenges and further my career as part of AAB’s dynamic growth.

The increasing focus on ESG and the rapid evolution of technology will continue to shape our industry. I’m looking forward to being at the forefront of these changes, helping clients navigate this new landscape while maintaining the highest audit standards.”
