“It’s a privilege to work with the clients that we do.”

Heather McPhee is a Payroll Assistant Manager based in our Stirling office. She is responsible for a team of five payroll professionals. Heather processes the bacs submissions for the PAYE and AEO monthly payments on behalf of clients. She also manages a portfolio of clients processing end to end payroll for them.

Working in payroll means that each day brings new challenges, each day Heather sets her team up for success with a meeting to discuss workloads, any legislation changes or issues that have/ might arise for them.

Prioritising the client relationship

“It’s really important to me that I build strong relationships with my clients. I want to really get to know them, their businesses and their goals. When we have those relationships, clients really trust us, trust that we know best, that we have their best interest at heart. That’s when clients feel comfortable to pick up the phone and ask for advice or support.

Even if I don’t know the answer to their question, working in a firm like AAB means that there’s experts in every service line and team that I can turn to for support. Working with clients and helping them year on year helps us to establish those relationships.”

Enabling clients to focus on pushing forward

“Payroll can be complex but what I really love about what we do is that we’re able to go in and take that burden away for clients. It’s a privilege to work with the clients that we do who are truly amazing businesses. Knowing we can give them peace of mind to focus their attention elsewhere and not on their payroll is so satisfying.”

Technology has its place

“We need technology to deliver. However, I’m a firm believer that technology shouldn’t be a complete replacement for hands-on work. Instead, technology should complement not overtake.”

Overcoming challenges together

“Payroll is often fast paced, which can mean tight turnarounds and often competing deadlines. That in itself can bring us great challenges. However, being prepared and working calmly means that as a team we can prioritise, work together and ensure that our client’s employees are paid accurately and on time.”

Excited for AAB’s future

“Being part of such a large organisation is so exciting. I have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues across the firm with experience and knowledge both in payroll and across our other service lines. This gives me the chance to learn from them and share my knowledge as well. I believe AAB can only get bigger and better with more and more success to come!”

Clients are our passion

“For me, it’s all about the clients. I really enjoy working with clients and doing a good job for them. Getting to know them and establishing a good working relationship is key. Having a good relationship can also identify other opportunities, knowing that your client trusts you and knows that you will do whatever it takes to fix an issue.”

Utilising experience and knowledge

“My greatest strength that I bring to the team is my experience. I have been working in Payroll for years and that knowledge and experience I use every day to help my clients and ensure we’re meeting their payrolling needs.”

Giving clients peace of mind

“One of the most memorable compliments from a client recently stated that last-minute payroll dramas are now a distant memory since we took over his payroll processing.”

Not as simple as it seems

“My pet hate is people thinking that payroll is just the press of a button. We wish it was that simple! It is fast paced and there are constant deadlines to meet on a weekly, fortnightly and monthly basis to ensure that employees are paid accurately and on time. Through years of experience working in payroll, I work well under pressure and have good organisational skills and the ability to remain calm which enables me to go above and beyond to meet the deadlines.”
