“EXPERT SECTOR KNOWLEDGE.”

Andy Shaw is an Audit Partner with a diverse experience and he heads up our Public Sector & Not For Profit team. He is also our Ethics Partner, ensuring that our teams understand their ethical responsibilities.

Based in our Edinburgh office, Andy works extensively on advising and supporting Public Sector, Charitable, Social Housing and Education bodies alongside commercial organisations.

MAKING AN IMPACT BEYOND AUDIT

“My role is ensuring that we deliver a robust, quality audit to our clients and ensuring we always add value to the audit process. Having a deep understanding of the sectors in which I work is critical to be able to add value to a client’s audit. My sector knowledge allows me to not only provide technical advice and recommendations but talk to clients about what’s changing in the sector and offer benchmarking advice based on my knowledge of other organisations.

Each sector has its own legislation, its own reporting requirements, and interpretation of them. I really like to understand my clients, their sector and build strong relationships so I can support them fully and help them to grow.”

NOT A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL

“My clients understand that what sets us apart is our client service as well as our technical knowledge. It’s not a ‘cookie cutter’ or a one size fits all approach. It truly is a tailored service. Not all organisations are the same, so I want to ensure added value in our audits by adapting our approach to our clients and their specific needs and risks.

Like AAB more generally, my approach is entrepreneurial and that comes from the experience I’ve had and the huge range of clients with which I’ve worked. I am touched by a great compliment an Audit Committee chair recently paid me, they said that they had “landed on their feet working with me.”

BUILDING AN EXPERIENCED TEAM

“I’ve been instrumental in building the Audit team here in Edinburgh, which has been great to see the huge growth and development of that team. People want to join AAB and build their career here primarily because of the culture of the firm. There’s a real fun and family feel to the team, it’s a great environment in which to work.

I look to recruit and train the best individuals. We recruit experienced individuals with wide-ranging experience as well as many new trainees. I love working with younger people coming into AAB as they often inspire us all.”

TECHNOLOGY TO BENEFIT CLIENTS

“I’ve supported our continuing development of data analytics software and techniques and that has been really exciting. It’s about software that talks to our clients’ systems and having the ability to interrogate 100% of transactional data, rather than just a sample. This means that we spend more time talking to clients about the risk in their business to better advise them.

We’re always looking to evolve and use technology to benefit our clients. We continue to invest and develop technology and I’m really interested in working on how we provide technology-driven benefits now and in the future.”
