Shelagh Marr is a manager in our People & Culture department. Based in Aberdeen, her role is very varied and involves supporting the team by ensuring that the practices and processes of the firm are adhered to and that these practices comply with employment regulations.

“IT’S OK TO NOT HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS.”

“My clients sometimes expect me to have all the answers, which I don’t! I will however ensure that I go and find the answers or come up with a plan as quickly as possible for them.  In my role, I need to have high levels of confidentiality and knowledge of employment law and the ability to then explain the best approach to deal with any problems.”

STRONG CULTURE LEADING TO STRONG RELATIONSHIPS

“To me there is nothing better than being able to help and support a team member, see them flourish and build a great career at AAB. The firms modern outlook allows me to portray more of my personality in the way I communicate with team members and in firm wide posts. The culture of the firm is always at the forefront of my mind in every task I approach.

Having the ability to talk to and see team members through Teams over the last couple of years has been great, but you can’t beat getting back into the office and seeing people face to face. Seeing someone face to face can lead to longer conversations where you get to know the person better.

There is often an assumption that “HR” will deal with “everything”, when really our job is to support Line Managers with any employee matters that they may have. I therefore try and educate Line Managers on why this is the case, then help and support them so that they are equipped with the tools and have the confidence to allow them to deal with any issues in the future.”

AN EMPATHETIC STANCE

“I think one of my greatest strengths is my empathy for people.  I like to think that I can put myself in other peoples’ shoes and consider how they may be feeling which helps me to support them. With my previous experience in a chargeable role, I understand the time constraints my colleagues face and so I try to relieve any stress by making things as easy as I can for them.”
