“I ALWAYS WORK TO FIND A SOLUTION.”

Richard is a Manager in our Corporate Tax team, specialising in entrepreneurial tax advice.

Based in both our Edinburgh and Glasgow offices, Richard has a background in both private and corporate tax, with previous experience including work in corporate structures, management buy-outs, succession planning and private equity partnerships.

In his role at AAB, Richard provides bespoke tax advice to our entrepreneurial clients, supporting them through their business journey form starting up to expansion to selling the business.

A GO-TO FOR CLIENTS

“The relationships I build with clients is all about collaboration, we work together to achieve their goals and create meaningful and active communication. I want to be their go-to guy for any tax related issues for their business, or if they are considering a transaction for example.

With the experience I have built up over the years and the experience of the team around me, we will always work to give our client a solution. Due to all the complex legislation within niche tax areas, I might not have the answer off the top of my head, but I take the time to research all queries thoroughly. I could never say to a client ‘oh, I can’t do that’ – it’s the worst thing to ever say. Instead, I’ll go back to them with a solution and a plan that achieves their goals.”

WORKING WITH CLIENTS AT ALL BUSINESS STAGES

“My role at AAB is centred around working with entrepreneurs throughout their whole business journey. The entrepreneurs live and breathe their business, and I find it such a motivating environment to be around.

I aim to be always available to my clients, as its really beneficial to feel like a partner in their business. Because there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to my role, as it does not revolve around compliance, I invest a lot of time in getting to know my client needs and the approaches they should be taking.

I have definitely been known to go the extra mile, researching and suggesting changes that the client didn’t ask me for! I hate inefficiencies and love solid processes, and I try to find improvements for my clients throughout their business. I’ve saved clients significant funds after helping them to automate their accounting processes, so I would like to think my approach is helpful!”

A REWARDING CAREER

“The most satisfying aspect of my client work is when a piece of work is completed to a high standard, and everyone involved is feeling that buzz of a job well done. That’s a feeling I want to make sure others in the team feel. I really enjoy working with more junior team members, mentoring graduates and those how are newly qualified. Its really important to collaborate with them through their exams and seeing them move up the ranks is really satisfying.

Compared to larger places I have worked in, everyone at AAB seems so friendly and it is a breath of fresh air. It’s a really nice atmosphere and the collaboration excites me. One thing I really love is how accessible the leadership team are day-to-day. You can tell how passionate they are about the business and that’s really engaging and gets us all involved.”
