Nicole Johnston is a manager in our private client tax team. Based in our Edinburgh office, Nicole specialises in inheritance tax, trusts, estates and manages the tax return compliance process for a portfolio of individual and Trustee clients. She also works with families looking to ensure their wealth is passed to the next generation with minimal tax leakage.

Nicole helps her clients by finding solutions to their concerns about their tax position. This often includes acting as agent in their relationship with HM Revenue & Customs thereby providing assurance that matters are up to date.

“Tax is so variable depending on individual circumstances which means it isn’t a simple process, but we are here to give clients that peace of mind that we understand their main issue or objective and will work with them to deliver a solution that is honest and accurate without costing them more than the tax they are trying to save! It is really satisfying when we know that we have not only achieved what the client needed, but when we have exceeded expectations.”

“Tax is ever evolving, so it can be a challenge to keep on top of all the different reporting requirements and to think ahead to what might come next. However, these technically challenging areas of my role also make it really rewarding. I am analytical and thorough, so my strengths lie in technical research and problem solving and I really enjoy this area of my work.”

“Nothing beats working with clients and developing relationships with our clients and colleagues. I am very much a people person so I hope that clients and colleagues see me as approachable and honest.”

“It is often said that accountancy is boring, but I don’t think that’s true. In our roles we get to meet and work with so many different people every day, and in so many different locations. With the rate that AAB is growing, that variety is going to continue apace too. Couple that with the changes across the accountancy sector, the advances in technology to support our client work, and it makes for an incredibly exciting career.

In my area, tax is so varied, and client needs are ever changing, so there is never a dull moment. In addition to this, the people who work in tax are always learning and developing too. I haven’t been bored for 20 years!”
