“I’M NOT SCARED TO CHALLENGE THE WAY WE DO THINGS.”

Laura Campbell is a Senior Manager within our People & Culture team. Based in Aberdeen, she’s responsible for coordinating the People & Culture team, ensuring everything runs as it should. That means overseeing all HR operations for the AAB Group, as well as being involved in specialist HR projects, including Reward, Learning and Development, Career Progression and Succession Planning.

In a former life, Laura was a corporate tax manager, so her technical knowledge and experience means she can view everything from both sides. And that comes in incredibly handy when she’s advising on how everyone can get the best out of their teams – or looking for the most practical solutions.

GROWING THE TEAM

“One of the most amazing and rewarding things for me has always been seeing people join the firm as school leavers, apprentices or graduates. Then in the blink of an eye, they’re getting through their exams. And before you know it, they’ve qualified and are getting promoted, maybe even joining the management team and leadership teams. The time just seems to go so quickly, but it’s incredible to be on that journey with someone. It’s definitely what makes me tick.”

ALWAYS READY TO CHANGE

“I’m always encouraging people to challenge the norm – or challenge the way that we do things here at AAB. Why do we do it that way? Is there a better way to do it? Everyone’s feedback is important and I’m not precious about any of our processes or the way that we work. I’m quite happy to listen to any ideas or suggestions – and if necessary, rip it up and start again.”

FINDING SOLUTIONS

“I’m proud of my knowledge and experience, both from working in People & Culture and within the technical side of the business. Both roles have allowed me to utilise one of my greatest strengths – being a problem solver. I never mind if someone comes to me and says this has happened, what should we do next? I might inwardly have a moment where I think, how are we going to deal with this? But there’s always a solution that works for everyone.

One of my greatest challenges is just the pace of work. But at the same time, it’s what keeps things exciting and interesting. So it’s just balancing that and making sure that the team is comfortable and nobody’s feeling overwhelmed. I think that’s the key – we are very much a team. Always willing to be flexible and help each other out. And these challenges help us learn and grow.”

A SENSE OF SATISFACTION

“I love getting things done. Every time I get a project over the line, or a task completed, it’s a great feeling. And I get so much satisfaction from that. And it’s even better if I feel like we’ve managed to do something even better than we did it last year. It’s all a learning curve but that’s what makes life so interesting.

And of course, I like people to think that I’m doing a good job. If somebody says, ‘Sounds like you are on top of that Laura’, or ‘I’m not worried about that anymore, because I know you’ll sort it’, that’s the best compliment and something I find very satisfying.”

The problem with a classic appraisal is that it can often be backward looking. Let’s say you schedule it every six months. It can be demoralising and time-consuming to go over old ground and then file a report…that in reality…
