“I TAKE A WEIGHT OFF MY CLIENT’S SHOULDERS.”
Debbie Campbell is a Senior Manager within our Virtual Finance team. Based in Aberdeen, she works with a wide range of businesses, across an array of very different sectors. And for every client, she provides a suite of services tailored to their needs.
On any day, Debbie might be giving her clients technical accounting advice on some unusual transactions. Or she could be working on monthly management accounts, cash flow forecast updates, year-end financial statements or balance sheet reconciliations. She certainly gets plenty of variety in this job!
PEACE OF MIND
“Every client is different, but ultimately I think most clients just want that reassurance of knowing that someone else is taking care of their accounting for them. They don’t need to worry about the deadlines or the accounting because that’s our job. And that means they can just get on with running their business.
Communication is essential to a good relationship – if we’re open and honest with each other that’s when everything works best. I put in a lot of effort to get to know my clients and build that trust. When they need help, they know they can reach out to me.”
RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
“My biggest challenge every day is working out what to do first! Luckily, I’m good at prioritising my workload and making sure everything is delivered when expected.
That’s what I enjoy about my role. There’s never a dull moment, every day is different and there’s always a new challenge arising to keep it interesting.”
“I know the assumption is that everyone who’s an accountant is good at maths. But I can tell you that’s not true – and my husband will back me up on that! Accountancy is about so much more than numbers. It’s much more about regulations, legalities, processes, controls. And of course, people management and team dynamics.
A lot of the work we do as accountants is problem-solving. So, when I’m considering an individual transaction, I am always thinking a few steps ahead. What happens next? What’s the impact on their balance sheet? It’s something that comes with experience, but it’s probably what adds the most value for my clients.”
“I think if you ask anyone what I’m like, they would say trustworthy, reliable and good with people. And of course, I’ve been doing this for a long time so I’m hoping they would say experienced too!
What I enjoy now, is being able to share that experience with the rest of my team. When graduates come in, there’s nothing better than being able to coach them through a task or topic that they’re struggling with.”
