Ben McGonigle is an Assistant Manager, helping a range of owner-managed businesses by providing a variety of services to assist their finance function, including advisory services. Based in Leeds, Ben works with a range of sectors and business sizes, providing him with a substantial exposure to many types of businesses.
A TRUSTED ADVISOR
My ideal relationship with a client would be one that involves regular contact, which helps us to get to know them personally and goes beyond that usual business relationship. This helps to understand the clients position better, and means that we can help them achieve their goals.
My clients expect me to be a trusted advisor who can help them with any questions they have, but who can also help them to spot opportunities for growth and success.
GETTING TO KNOW CLIENTS AS PEOPLE
For me, one of the most satisfying aspects of the work I do is working with long standing clients where we can build good relationships, and can get to know them as people rather than just as businesses.
AN EXCELLENT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
My colleagues are always friendly and we’re always happy to help each other. This creates an excellent environment for team members to learn and thrive, as well as building confidence. Being able to help team members and see them improve is one of the most satisfying parts of the role.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TECH
Having the tech in place to help a client means that we have up to date information to help advise our clients – without this the information they receive is out of date. This doesn’t mean that we don’t speak to our clients, but instead creates more conversation points which maintains the hands-on approach.
NEW SOLUTIONS EVERY DAY
The technology in the industry is constantly changing, and there are new solutions appearing every day. Working out which of these is most effective for our clients and will bring the most benefit is key. We monitor the new apps and maintain good relationships with a variety of apps to make sure that we keep up to date with any changes in the area.
HELPING CLIENTS UNDERSTAND THE NUMBERS
The industry is changing and evolving, and as processes become more automated the need to understand the results is becoming more important. We can help our clients to understand this, and what it means for their business.
The range of expertise in the AAB group is excellent, and means that there is plenty of opportunity to learn and develop from people who know their area inside out. Personally, this provides an excellent opportunity to grow and develop my own skill set, and to forge a future that suits me.
Probably my greatest strength is my desire to help others learn and achieve their own ambitions, alongside having an excellent work ethic and a good team player mentality.
BRINGING TRUE VALUE
One of the ways my profession is perceived is that we’re all boring and love spending time number-crunching! Whilst the numbers are clearly an important aspect of our work, looking beyond them is where we bring the true value.
