“TURNING COMPLEXITY INTO CLARITY.”

Based in our Edinburgh office, Tom is an Audit Assistant Manager at AAB and is a key point of contact for a diverse portfolio of clients, ensuring audit engagements run smoothly from start to finish. In a typical week, Tom coordinates multiple client engagements – scoping work, understanding each client’s priorities, overseeing delivery and reviewing outputs to ensure they are both technically robust and commercially relevant. Alongside client delivery, he plays an active role in supporting and coaching junior team members, helping them build confidence both internally and in client-facing situations.

Tom was drawn to a career in professional services by a natural enjoyment of problem-solving and collaboration. He has always been motivated by understanding how businesses work in practice and what drives their success. That curiosity, combined with additional experience in Corporate Finance and Restructuring, allows him to see issues from multiple perspectives – balancing technical accuracy with real-world application to deliver meaningful value for clients.

ADDING VALUE THROUGH LISTENING

“For me, strong client relationships start with listening. Before I offer solutions or advice, I want to understand what really matters to the client, what pressures they are under and what success looks like from their perspective. That early investment is a non-negotiable because it builds trust and ensures we are aligned from the outset.

One client that stands out where communication was key, involved facing tight deadlines and evolving requirements. Rather than focusing on the pressure, I prioritised clear communication, regular check-ins and transparency around progress. By keeping things practical and solutions-focused, the relationship quickly shifted from transactional to collaborative, and the outcome was stronger because of it.”

BEING A TRUSTED PARTNER

“The most rewarding part of working with clients is seeing that moment when something complex suddenly becomes clear. When a client moves from feeling overwhelmed to confident and informed, it reinforces why I do what I do. Over time, it’s especially satisfying when clients begin to see you not just as an external adviser, but as a trusted extension of their own team.”

STRENGTHS THAT CLIENTS VALUE

“I bring a calm, considered approach to my work, particularly in high-pressure situations. Clients value reliability and consistency, and I strive to deliver while keeping them informed throughout the process.

My background across multiple service lines helps me look beyond whether something is technically correct and consider whether it makes commercial sense. I enjoy asking the right questions, challenging assumptions where needed, and translating complex issues into clear, actionable insight.

Just as importantly, I genuinely enjoy working with people. Understanding how businesses operate, and the individuals behind them, allows me to tailor my approach and deliver relevant and supportive advice.”

BALANCING DETAIL WITH DIRECTION

“One of the biggest challenges in audit is finding the right balance between technical and practical. My approach is to stay grounded, ensuring outputs are clear, focused and timely, while still meeting the highest professional standards. By keeping the client’s objectives front and centre, challenges become opportunities to add value rather than obstacles to progress.”

GROWING TOGETHER WITH AAB

“What really sets AAB apart is its people. There is a genuine culture of collaboration, openness and continuous learning. Colleagues are generous with their time and knowledge, and there’s a shared commitment to doing the right thing – for clients and for each other.

Being part of a firm that values both technical excellence and human connection makes for meaningful engagement. It also creates an environment where people are encouraged to grow, develop and bring their best selves to work every day.”

EMBRACING INNOVATION

“I’m particularly interested in how data analytics and AI are shaping the future of professional services. Used well, technology has the potential to enhance insight, improve efficiency and support better decision-making for clients.

Alongside this, I’m keen to continue developing commercially – deepening my understanding of different sectors and business models so I can provide increasingly strategic support as clients grow and evolve.”

BEYOND THE FIGURES

“A common misconception about audit and assurance is that it’s purely about numbers. While numbers are important, the real value lies in understanding people, businesses and decision-making.”

CONFIDENCE AT EVERY STAGE

“Whether I’m supporting a growing business, navigating challenges or providing reassurance, I want clients to feel supported and informed at every stage. By combining technical strength with a practical, people-focused approach, I aim to build lasting relationships that help businesses move forward with confidence.”
