Meet the Payroll & Employment team

Payroll.
IT sector. Business services. Construction and property. Energy. Public sector. Not for Profit.
Susan McLean is an Assistant Manager within our Payroll team. Based in our Glasgow office, Susan works diligently to create payroll journals, finance reports, and other key reports for clients. Her years of experience, along with her extensive specialist knowledge, means Susan is extremely well placed to provide a payroll service to her valued clients.
“To me, a good relationship with a client is when you can not only give them what they need at the present moment, but also when you can look at how you can assist in other areas or future areas and be able to convey that information to them. It’s about being proactive as well as just reactive. That’s where the real added value of payroll lies.”
“Clients expect more than just for their employees to be paid on time – they expect their employees to be paid correctly, and to have all the reports they need to allow them to upload into their accounts package. It’s a great feeling when clients are happy with the service I and my colleagues provide, and when I’ve been able to help them find a solution to an issue or work together to develop one.”
“The great thing about AAB being tech enabled is that it allows the freedom of choice and flexibility both for us, and for our clients. It gives our clients the option of contacting us remotely or coming in for a meeting. It also means that clients can receive information in a format that suits them, and is the easiest for them to process and refer to.”
“Deadlines for payments is probably the most challenging aspect of working in Payroll; ensuring that the information is in the correct format and on time. But luckily, I’m surrounded by a fantastic team that is already ready to help one another, and that makes meeting the deadlines so much easier and less stressful.”
“One of the most exciting things about working in Payroll, and at AAB, is the fast paced nature of both! Things are changing pretty constantly, and I think this is a great motivator to do better and better, not to become complacent. At AAB we’re not known for resting on our laurels, and it’s exactly that daring nature and that willingness to take big steps and keep moving forward that keeps it interesting to me.”
“I think one of the greatest strengths I bring to AAB is communication; being able to talk openly and clearly with clients and colleagues. I’m also a hard worker. I actually really enjoy a challenge, and nothing gives me greater satisfaction that being able to assist clients and colleagues when they need help.”
“A compliment from a client that I always remember is ‘Thank you so much for always keeping me right, I appreciate it’. Honesty and integrity are really important to me, and I think they’re especially important values to hold when it comes to conversations that aren’t so easy to have – they tend to be the most important ones.”
“Some people do genuinely believe that ‘payroll is just hitting a button’. It’s frustrating when obviously we know how untrue that is, and how much meticulous and consistent work goes into providing successful payroll. It will be a good day when people acknowledge and recognise the work and the importance of strong payroll support from team members and functioning, ever-improving systems, but until then, I’m happy to keep proving people wrong on this front!”
