“Always raising the bar in Audits & SAR”

Nathan Turner is an Audit Assistant Manager based in our Bolton office, who blends technical expertise with a personable approach when it comes to his clients. His week is a mix of managing audit teams, reviewing work, and delivering audits directly, but his specialist focus is on Solicitors’ Accounts Rules (SAR) engagements. Whether he’s guiding clients through compliance requirements or advising on practical improvements, Nathan prides himself on making the audit process smooth, supportive, and genuinely valuable.

Having started his career with the team in Bolton and progressing through AAT and ACA qualifications, he has spent a decade building relationships and gaining the practical experience that enables him to deliver audits with accuracy, efficiency, and empathy.

Building strong client connections

“One of the first things I prioritise with a new client is taking the time to understand both the business and the people behind it. Of course, I want to know the commercial goals, how the business operates, and where it’s heading, but I also make the effort to connect with the individuals driving it forward. For me, the most productive relationships are built on trust, and that only happens when you go beyond the numbers to make a genuine human connection.

A good example of this was with a family business I supported through its very first audit. They were understandably overwhelmed, unsure what was required, and anxious about the process. I broke it down for them step by step, explained why we needed certain information, and provided practical advice on improving their systems and controls. That experience built trust not just in the audit process, but also in our working relationship. Since then, they’ve stayed in touch and regularly seek advice throughout the year, which is the kind of long-term client connection I always aim for.”

Making a real difference

“The most rewarding part of my role is seeing the tangible impact of the support I provide. Whether it’s through a smooth audit process, helping clients gain more clarity over their finances, or suggesting improvements to internal controls, it’s fulfilling to know my work makes a difference. I worked with a growing business that was struggling with documentation and control processes. Their systems weren’t scaling effectively, which created confusion and delays. By working with them to identify gaps and suggest realistic, practical solutions, we streamlined their processes and gave them greater confidence in managing their finances. Seeing how those changes improved their business was incredibly rewarding.”

Adding value through audits

“One of the misconceptions I often come across is that audits are all about catching people out. For me, an audit is much more collaborative. It’s about helping clients improve, giving them confidence in their numbers, and strengthening their processes for the future. That means I’m not just looking at compliance, but I’m also looking for opportunities to add value.

My strengths lie in communication and building relationships, which help create trust and transparency throughout the process. Coupled with a detail-oriented mindset, these skills ensure quality and accuracy while keeping clients engaged and informed every step of the way.”

A seamless process

“At the heart of what I do is a focus on relationships, accuracy, and improvement. I enjoy supporting solicitor practices with SAR requirements, working with family-owned and medium-sized businesses, and helping teams deliver work to the highest standard. One of the greatest compliments I’ve received from a client was their feedback on the transparency and thoroughness of my work, along with how smoothly I managed the team through the audit process. That’s the standard I set for myself every time.”

Overcoming challenges

“Like many in the profession, one of my biggest early challenges was stepping into a management role and carrying the same full audit workload I had before this new role. This shift required me to improve my time management, delegate effectively, and sharpen my communication skills, both with clients and with my team. These lessons in organisation and leadership have stayed with me and shape the way I manage projects today. By prioritising teamwork and clarity, I make sure audits run smoothly and clients get the support they need without unnecessary stress.”

A collaborative approach

“It’s not just client growth that I find rewarding, it’s also the growth of our people. As a training firm, we have a responsibility to nurture early careers, and I really enjoy playing a role in that. Whether it’s supporting someone through exams, reviewing their work, or sharing knowledge on the job, I find it rewarding to watch colleagues’ confidence build over time. We’ve also got a very close-knit and social team culture, which makes for an environment where everyone feels comfortable asking for help or just having a chat whenever it’s needed. That collaborative, supportive spirit makes a huge difference.”

Looking ahead

“I’m particularly interested in the role of technology in audit, especially how AI can be used to make processes more efficient. The ability to analyse data faster, highlight risks sooner, and reduce the manual workload has the potential to transform audits. I believe embracing these tools will allow us to focus more on providing insight and advice that clients really value.”
