“Providing audits that give clients confidence, not complexity.”

Lauren McLoughlin is an Audit Assistant Manager based in our Newry office, specialising in external audit and financial reporting. She is focused on delivering high-quality, accurate audits through a clear, organised and collaborative process that gives clients confidence in their numbers. Known for her calm, structured approach, Lauren supports clients through complex audit requirements while also playing a key role in mentoring and developing audit trainees, helping to strengthen both the team and the quality of service delivered to our clients.

A career shaped by challenge and variety

“My background in Mathematics led me naturally towards a career that values analytical thinking and problem-solving. External audit initially appealed to me because of the opportunities for professional development and continuous learning, but it’s the variety that has kept me here.

Every engagement brings a new challenge. Different businesses, sectors and priorities mean that no two audits are ever the same. I enjoy working closely with clients to understand how their businesses operate and applying my technical knowledge in a way that genuinely supports their objectives. Building strong working relationships through collaboration and open communication is a big part of why I enjoy my role.”

A client-first audit mindset

“External audit operates under increasing scrutiny, and I take the responsibility that comes with that seriously. My approach balances professional scepticism with a client-focused mindset, ensuring audits meet the highest standards while minimising disruption to day-to-day operations.

I pride myself on quickly understanding how a business operates and identifying what matters most to them. This allows me to tailor the audit process to reflect the client’s business model, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. Combined with strong organisation and clear communication, this helps me manage audits efficiently while maintaining a high level of technical quality.”

People at the heart of everything

“One of the most important lessons I’ve learned throughout my career is that people are central to professional success. Prioritising relationships with both clients and colleagues creates an environment built on trust, respect and transparency.

When people feel valued and listened to, collaboration improves and challenges are easier to overcome. This mindset shapes how I work with my teams and my clients, and I apply it consistently across every engagement. I believe this people-first approach leads not only to better audits, but also to more positive, productive working relationships for everyone involved.”

Building trust through communication

“Clear, consistent communication is a non-negotiable for me when working with clients. I make a point of staying in regular contact throughout the audit process, whether through scheduled meetings, video calls or quick check-ins to resolve questions as they arise.

These conversations help keep the audit moving efficiently and ensure clients feel informed and involved, rather than overwhelmed or uncertain. They also create space for meaningful dialogue, allowing us to identify opportunities to add value beyond the core audit requirements.”

Structure, clarity & confidence

“My weeks are varied, but they always centre around delivering high-quality external audits and supporting clients through the financial reporting process. I’m typically involved in planning and leading audit fieldwork, reviewing financial statements, managing timelines and coordinating with both clients and internal teams to keep everything running smoothly.

Organisation underpins everything I do. I work hard to ensure audits are well planned, clearly communicated and delivered efficiently, so clients understand what’s required of them and feel confident at every stage. For me, a successful audit is one that feels seamless from the client’s perspective, even when the underlying work is complex.”

Experience across sectors and stages

“I have audit experience across a wide range of industries, including technology, retail and public services, and I work with organisations of all sizes. From supporting start-ups as they establish strong financial foundations, to helping family-owned businesses maintain long-standing legacies, to meeting the complex reporting requirements of larger or listed entities, I adapt my approach to suit each client.

Understanding the wider context of a business is key to delivering an effective audit. By taking the time to do this, I’m able to add value beyond compliance and support clients in presenting financial information they can stand behind with confidence.”

Making audit a positive experience

“Audit is often seen as a necessary challenge, but my aim is always to make it a positive and rewarding process for clients. I find the greatest satisfaction when clients reach the end of an engagement feeling confident in their financial reporting and proud of the outcome.

A recent example involved leading a complex first-year audit for a client with a highly innovative business model. First audits can be daunting, particularly where industry classifications and technical accounting issues are involved. By maintaining regular communication, working closely with internal technical specialists and keeping the client fully informed, we delivered a successful outcome that accurately reflected the nature of the business.”

A collaborative way of working

“Alongside my client work, I’m passionate about supporting and mentoring audit trainees. I enjoy helping them develop their technical skills, confidence and professional judgement, and I believe investing in our people is essential to delivering consistently high standards for clients.

The collaborative culture at AAB, combined with the depth of expertise across the firm, means we’re able to support clients with confidence and deliver solutions that go beyond compliance.”

Changing perceptions of audit

“One misconception I’m keen to challenge is that audits are purely about finding problems. I see them as an opportunity to add insight, strengthen reporting processes and provide reassurance. My goal is to deliver audits that clients experience as supportive, constructive and genuinely valuable.”
