From Placement Student to Director

From Placement Student to Director

At school I had always enjoyed working with numbers so a career in Accounting seemed like a good fit.

I studied Accounting and Finance at the Robert Gordon University and I first came across AAB whilst applying for my placement year.  I knew as soon as I attended the placement open evening that I wanted to work for AAB. There was very much a work hard, play hard culture and I gained so much experience from my year in the firm. At the end of the placement I was subsequently offered a place in the AAB graduate training programme once I had completed my degree.

After graduating I joined the audit team and over the years progressed from trainee to Senior Manager gaining experience across a wide range of clients and sectors. I really enjoyed working in the audit team and the variety of work I was exposed to. I could be dealing with an owner managed family business one day to reporting to an international group the next, the focus always being on providing outstanding client service.

After 14 years as an auditor the opportunity arose to take on a new challenge.  Due to the rapid growth of the firm a new role was available within the internal finance team where I would be responsible for the day-to-day finance operations and implementation and control of the firm’s financial budgets.  I knew this role would be perfect for me and my experience working within the audit team meant I could also relate to the challenges faced by the technical teams. Now instead of dealing with clients the partners and my colleagues are my clients!

I was recently promoted to Finance Director and as the firm continues to grow, so do the opportunities to develop the finance team and the support we provide to the firm. Although many things have changed over the last 20 years the core AAB values remain the same and the support that I have received over the years has been invaluable in getting me to where I am now.
