Returning to AAB 20 Years After My University Placement

Returning to AAB 20 Years After My University Placement

I knew from a young age I wanted to become an accountant and have always loved working with numbers. After I left school, I studied Accounting & Finance at the Robert Gordon University which offered a 3rd year work placement. As my 2nd year was coming to an end I was asked to attend an interview at AAB.

As a nervous 20-year old, I can still remember my interview, walking into the office which was a converted church and quickly being put at ease when I met Robbie Gordon and John Black. The interview went well, and I was subsequently offered a placement position starting in the summer of 1999. All placement students at AAB are given the same exposure as graduates and the experience I gained during my placement was invaluable and set me in good stead for my final year before graduation.

After graduating I went on to complete my 3-year ICAS training contract with AAB, mainly working within audit, however I also had exposure to accounts preparation, VAT and corporation tax work.  All in all, it was a very good grounding for the next step in my career and I thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the AAB family and working alongside experienced professionals who did all they could to help me achieve my goals. However, after 5 years I wanted to further develop my skills, knowledge and experience within industry.

Since leaving AAB in 2005, I spent 14-years working in various roles within the Oil & Gas industry, covering accounting and reporting for international, owner-managed and private equity backed businesses. I loved getting behind the numbers, experiencing different systems and processes, and being on the side of the auditee instead of the auditor!

In 2019, an opportunity came up to re-join AAB as part of the recently created Virtual Finance Function (VFF) Team, I jumped at the chance! This was a perfect opportunity to take all the experience I had gained during my time in industry and re-apply it back in the firm that provided me with the steppingstone to realise my career ambitions. Who would have thought that literally 20-years to the day since I started my placement at AAB, I would be returning as a Senior Manager!

Our VFF service is a bespoke client solution to financial outsourcing.  It utilises secure cloud-based technology to deliver global virtual support to client in-house finance teams or to provide a fully outsourced finance function.

During the last 20-years, AAB has gone from strength to strength, building business relations, developing talent, offering business leading solutions while quadrupling the number of employees, with offices now in Edinburgh and London. The number of service lines has grown exponentially, but the culture remains the same.  AAB values its employees and everyone is encouraged to succeed, with no end to your potential. AAB are a very supportive employer and promote a good work/life balance, their agile approach to working provides me with the flexibility to provide focused and unrivalled client service while balancing the demands of bringing up a young family.
