Life at sea to AAB

When I joined Anderson Anderson & Brown 4 and a half years ago I would never had predicted that I would be where I am now - Finance Administrator.

After spending years as a dancer travelling the world on board cruise ships the time had come for me to establish a base and settle back in my hometown of Aberdeen. My journey at AAB started in 2015 when I applied for the position of part time receptionist. Being aware that the company was such a well-established and highly regarded accountancy firm it was to my surprise and delight when I was offered the role and I began my new adventure front of house.

Reception was the perfect role for me to transition from the entertainment industry, allowing me to use my customer service skills to interact with the clients. Building relationships with some of our regular visitors was something that I really enjoyed and took pride in. Part time employment was short lived and I soon was offered the opportunity to go full time which I welcomed.

Being a very social person, I would commonly interact and assist other departments and as I grew in confidence, I was soon helping the finance department on a daily basis.  At first this was a very daunting thing for me as Maths was never my strong point at school – In fact, I was terrible. To then find myself working with numbers and figures was very surreal and unexpected. As my workload became more regular within finance, I was offered the opportunity to join the team full time leaving my role as receptionist behind.

With doubts in my ability, I was apprehensive and admittedly scared initially however I still knew this was a fantastic move for my self-growth and development. The support and encouragement I received from management and colleagues has been superb and a testament to the company. For me AAB stands out as an employer who pride themselves on internal recruitment and employee progression. They have given me opportunities that have not only provided me with a career but confidence and self-belief.

One year has passed since I joined the finance team and I have not looked back loving every challenge faced and enjoying every day.   With AAB I feel at home and I am excited to see what is next in store for my career.
