Isla Mayfield is the Senior Operations Manager of our Business Advisory Services. Based in our Aberdeen office, she ensures partners and directors get all the support they need at an operational level – and have the right people in place to deliver an exceptional service. She also still advises some clients that she’s worked with for many years.

Isla plays a key role in the development, coaching and mentoring of the team. She’s also heavily involved in pushing forward the tech used throughout the business. And she loves the fact that every day brings a new challenge.

“I really believe that people relationships are everything. In fact, one client told me it’s having someone they can trust, or pick up the phone to at any time, that makes all the difference. That’s why I always ask people, ‘Are we a service provider or are we a partner, an extension of someone’s team?’ Because as soon as you’re just a service provider, we undervalue our unique selling point.”

“One thing that always surprises me is that people assume we’re all accountants. Yes, a lot of us are, but a very high proportion of our people come from all sorts of backgrounds. We’ve got engineers and law students. And look at me – I did zoology at university! At our firm, there really is a whole array of different people who come together to provide the service that we do.”

PROBLEM SOLVING

“My work spans a lot of different areas and to be honest, I think a lot of things come my way just so it gets done. If it’s on the difficult pile, give it to me and it will be dealt with. That’s probably because I’m quite good at problem-solving and coming up with ideas.

I like the whole project management piece ­– I like getting my teeth into something. I’ve worked with the private client team and am well placed to understand what it is they need from an operational perspective, so they can then deliver to clients.”

“People development is key to the work that I do – and the thing that I find most rewarding. Nothing makes me happier than seeing junior members of our team learn, grow and move up. And I’m not too precious about people jumping over me, because as far as I’m concerned if I’ve done my job well, they should be in a position to do that. They absolutely deserve it.

We provide an awesome experience for our clients, and I believe that should be the same for our team members too. I don’t consider one any different to the other. I think sometimes it’s easy to forget how important that actually is. But at the end of the day, for us to deliver the best client service possible, we have to work together as a team.”
